Trader-Joes

Trader Joe’s — the affordable grocery favored by hipsters and normals alike — is on its way to Williamsburg, according to Crain’s. The store just signed a lease on an 18,000-square-foot space, part of a mixed-use development to be built at 206 Kent Avenue, between North 3rd Street and Metropolitan Avenue.

The area has few major grocery stores at present, although a Whole Foods is on the verge of opening just three blocks away from the newly announced Trader Joe’s.

The lot at 206 Kent (pictured above), which is currently vacant, was purchased by Alliance Private Capital for $18 million in January 2014. Alliance and its CEO Mike Kohn are no strangers to Brooklyn.

The “real estate capital intermediary” — as their website calls them — nabbed the old General Linen Supply & Laundry plant at 835 Myrtle Ave in 2013 and was involved with the purchase of the site for the long-stalled apartments at 510 Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg.

Last year, there were rumors of a Trader Joe’s in the works at 856 Washington Avenue in Prospect Heights. But nothing has materialized yet.

At the 206 Kent Avenue site, Crain’s reports, Alliance is planning to build a 45,000-square-foot building, with ground-floor retail anchored by Trader Joe’s and office space above.
