Anticipated to be Bed Stuy’s first sit-down Mexican restaurant with a full bar, Tepache Mexican Grill was open for business Sunday afternoon at 361 Halsey Street in Bed Stuy when we happened by, and we were intrigued to see how it turned out.

It was fairly busy, considering the late afternoon hour, with at least three full tables and curious passerby stopping to peer inside and check out the menu posted on the window.

The restaurant is casual and, it turns out, does not serve alcohol. When we first wrote about the venue’s plans, commenters pointed out that the location, less than 200 feet from the large church across the street, would probably mean no liquor license.

But, perhaps to make up for that, the menu features a wide assortment of aqua frescas (fresh fruit drinks) and smoothies. It also has entrees such as pork ribs verde, roast chicken, and burgers. There are also soups, salads, appetizers, and a huge array of burritos.

Some of the more unusual offerings include a kale burrito and taquitos with fillings of beef tongue, veal head and stewed lamb. Sauteed chicken livers, ceviche and a baby octopus salad are some of a long list of appetizers.

There is table service as well as a counter for to-go orders.

Eager diners will have to wait a few days for the smoothies and burgers, however, a worker at the counter informed us, since the eatery does not yet have a blender. (He didn’t explain the burger holdup.) Delivery is also in the works.

Prices are quite reasonable, in case you are wondering (entrees with sides are $7.60 to $16). It is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.
