The state Economic Development Corporation is holding a hearing tonight on the plan to build a pair of residential towers at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park — and both opponents and supporters of the plan will be out in force.

As we’ve covered previously, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation needs a modification of the park’s General Project Plan to move forward with proposed affordable housing in the planned 31- and 15-story towers. Community Board 2 approved the modification earlier this month; this hearing is the next step in the approval process.

The official announcement of the hearing is here.

Among the issues raised by opponents of the plan is whether buildings of that size are needed to support the park financially, as BBP asserts. They’ve also raised concerns about school overcrowding and diminished access to the waterfront park.

The Brooklyn Heights Association is rallying opponents to speak out on these issues and others at tonight’s hearing. Meanwhile, supporters of the plan will make a show of force with a pre-hearing rally, where labor and local business groups and others will stand with Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen and BBP President Regina Myer.

The hearing runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the auditorium at St. Francis College, Founders Hall, at 180 Remsen Street. The rally will begin out front at 5:15 p.m.
