In and out of Dumbo by Subway, Bike, Boat and on Foot

    by

60 Water Street, a new rental building in Dumbo, has a location that’s hard to beat. It’s a block away from the river and Brooklyn Bridge Park, and steps away from neighborhood landmarks such as St. Ann’s Warehouse, Grimaldi’s, and Jacques Torres. And with the views of the Manhattan skyline from its rooftop garden, you might wonder why residents of 60 Water would leave to go anywhere else.

Fortunately, whether you’re heading off to work or just having a weekend adventure, Dumbo offers a lot more ways to get there than by driving or taking the subway. Thanks to Dumbo’s riverside location between two of Brooklyn’s most iconic bridges, residents of the neighborhood can easily walk, bike, or even take the ferry to their destination.

Read on for the many ways you can spice up your commute.

    By Subway

If you want to go somewhere by conventional means, Dumbo and 60 Water are served by two nearby subway stops, the F train at York Street (about an eight-minute walk away), and the A/C trains at High Street (about nine minutes).

The High Street station is on the border of Brooklyn Heights and Cadman Plaza. The walk to the York Street station will take you through Dumbo past coffee shops and bagel stores — a nice way to fuel up for the ride.

    By Ferry

But why go under the river when you can commute to work on the river, the way Walt Whitman did? The Fulton Ferry Landing is about a block away, and those crossing to Wall Street/Pier 11 on the East River Ferry can get across in about five minutes.

Going north, you can make stops in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Long Island City and East 34th Street, with the ride from Dumbo to Midtown taking about 25 minutes. There’s a free shuttle bus from East 34th Street that will take you as far as Sixth Avenue.

A single pass will set you back $4 on weekdays, or $6 on weekends, with a $1 surcharge bicycle. You can also get an unlimited monthly pass for $160, or $190 with your bike.

    By Bike

Dumbo is a prime launch pad for all sorts of cycling adventures. If you’re heading into Manhattan, you have your choice of two nearby bridges. The entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge is only a few blocks away. You’ll have to walk your bike up a short flight of stairs, but the views from Brooklyn’s most famous landmark are worth it. Just be careful of all the tourists!

The Manhattan Bridge has a dedicated bike lane, and a gradual ramp up to the bridge. This is the bridge of choice for the serious commuter, and it’s about a 5-minute bike ride away.

One thing that makes 60 Water ideal for cyclists is that the Brooklyn Greenway is right outside your door. By taking it west and south, you can ride along Brooklyn Bridge Park to Red Hook, and then follow dedicated bike lanes all the way down to the spectacular Shore Parkway in Bay Shore, which in turn will take you most of the way to Coney Island.

By going east and north, you can ride along the Brooklyn Navy Yard before hitting the waterfronts of Williamsburg and Greenpoint.

Of course, the best way to enjoy the Brooklyn Bridge is on foot, taking the time to enjoy the architecture and the views. From 60 Water, the entrance to the bridge is only about a six-minute walk away. You’ll probably be doing this walk a lot with your visiting guests!

The Manhattan Bridge is only a ten-minute walk away, and walkers (or runners!) have their own path separate from the cyclists. This bridge will take you straight to Canal Street and Chinatown.
