LPC to Vote on Designation for Third Crown Heights North Historic District Tuesday

We’re excited to tell you that the Landmark Preservation Commission will vote Tuesday morning on whether or not to designate the proposed historic district Crown Heights North III. It has been in the works for years, and the hearing for calendaring the vote was held way back in 2011!
It looks like this will be a quickie vote. The agenda item on the LPC calendar allots 15 minutes. Also, the item did not go up on the LPC calendar until just a few days ago. We’re not sure what that all means, but we hope it’s good news for the preservationists and neighborhood residents who’ve worked so hard to make this happen.
The proposed area includes 650 buildings built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, according to the LPC description. You can see the boundaries outlined in red, above. The blue boundaries show the existing two historic districts. A fourth district has also been proposed but is not yet calendared as far as we know. You can read more about the third proposed district on the website of the neighborhood group Crown Heights North Association.
We’ll be watching this one closely and will let you know what happens.

Oughtn’t we to hold our kudos until after the vote? I don’t trust this LPC to necessarily vote yes.
This seems like a good omen for some very worthy blocks. I hope it’s a sign of greater action in adjacent nabes.
And to think this was the site of running street battles a few years ago. I wonder what percentage of the new wave has even heard of the riots? Or could name the mayor at the time? The velocity of the change in CH blows my mind.
Also, to any aspiring documentary filmmakers out there, here’s a free tip on becoming famous. Take advantage of all of the archival footage available and make a Crown Heights riots documentary. It somehow doesn’t exist. Palm D’Or layup.

It is looking like next year. Not sure why Bedford is taking so long. I should have been done. I think Park Slope is waiting too… I am bit concerned for the other Stuyvesants..
