55 pearl street townhouses dumbo 32015

Alloy Development’s concrete-clad townhouses at 55-57 Pearl Street in Dumbo are almost finished and looking good. The five modern townhouses have been in the works for nearly a year, and they hit the market with renderings for $4,100,000 a pop back when the corner site was just a garage. Now they’re all sold out, according to the development’s website.

The five-story homes share a facade made of one-foot-deep concrete ductal fins. The ground floor facade will be wood, but it hasn’t been installed yet. Each house will have four bedrooms, three baths, a one-car garage and private outdoor space.

  1. I work in Dumbo and have been watching these go up. I can’t understand of why anybody would design or buy a home that looks like a 1970s Brutalist government office or a data center. One floor is basically all glass with concrete ribs. The others have itty bitty arrow slit windows and ribbed slab facades. Simply ghastly..

  2. It’s clear that we readers can still express our disagreements freely, and I don’t think this website would be able to withstand the backlash if it somehow curtailed that dynamic. (And yes, that building looks like a detention center circa 1960. Totally misguided) But it is also true that the current version of Brownstoner is a lot more corporate and gets more so every year. The original one tended to take obvious pleasure in challenging realtor-speak and puncturing their bubble with analysis and information. Like the old HOTD posts with an interactive bar that polled readers on their opinion of what a house was worth. Of course, we still comment within the current format of the HOTD but the website’s intention is not to be “disruptive” towards the real estate industry. Then again, Mr.B and the Founding Fathers (or the Mothers of Invention if you want to keep it gender-balanced) have a right to monetize their blog.

  3. People shouldn’t get their panties in a bunch because the writer said “looking good”. The writer is allowed to have an opinion as well. I personally agree with the writer because I’m a big brutalist architecture buff, but I can totally understand the point of view of people who hate it – it’s not their thing. Nevertheless, the writer should be able to express his/her opinion. And furthermore, all five houses have already been sold, so I don’t think that this particular developer cares very much about the opinions of readers on this site. He has already pocketed his $20,000,000.
