136 macdonough street bed stuy 112014

This Amzi Hill house at 136 MacDonough Street in the original Stuyvesant Heights Historic District is just dripping with incredible original details, including an original bathroom with the marble and nickel sink. It’s in estate condition so it will need the works, but so do plenty of houses in Brooklyn and few are as nice as this one.

The thing about this listing that puzzles us is that it sold at auction for $1,650,000 in June — to applause — as we reported at the time. But there is no record of that sale (or any other) in public records. So evidently the deal never closed.

Now it is asking $1,790,000, and the listing suggests it could be divided into a four-family.

That would be a travesty. Somebody please, please buy this house and save it.

Bed Stuy Brownstone Goes for $1.65 Million at Kings County Public Auction [Brownstoner]

Update: A reader who is a veteran of auctions tells us a relative must have been discovered after the auction, since if the buyer defaulted the house would have gone to the next highest bidder.

  1. This is a beauty and one of my favorite streets in Bed Stuy. And that bathroom, with the original wood floors, marble sink and cast iron tub. I would love to renovate that bathroom with all the original pieces- and then never leave.

1.8million seems aggressive for this location. Especially if needs let’s say 250-350K worth of work. I’ve been seeing a lot of the 1.5m and above properties sit longer lately. This one is special, so who knows.

  2. Whoever told you such a general statement as “in Bedstuy a million seven could get you a house that was move-in condition with updated mechanicals… “Etc is doing an injustice to the housing stock in Bedstuy.
The high prices that townhouses yield in BedStuy (versus Bushwick) is thanks to the beautiful housing stock. Therefore a house with such amazing details as this one will be snatched at above 1.5 even if it needs money.
You cant do such nice original details with all money in the world! Thats what people pay for.
And a house that’s in move in condition and new construction with no orignal details will go for below 1 mill..
So lets not compare apples to apples!
