752 pacific street demo prospect heights 102014

Greenland and Forest City Ratner Friday started demolishing the big old warehouse at 752 Pacific Street to make way for two apartment buildings planned for the block between Carlton and Vanderbilt Avenues — a large piece of the Atlantic Yards/Pacific Park development. A representative for Forest City Ratner sent us these photos of the demolition.

The 100 percent affordable 535 Carlton Avenue and market-rate 550 Vanderbilt Avenue will both rise on this property, bringing a total of 580 apartments, 298 of which will be affordable. The rep revealed that two other buildings (“B13 and B14”) are tentatively planned for the site as well, but permits haven’t been filed yet. Click through to see more.

  1. As a longtime resident of the area, I would have bet the complete opposite. We saw new construction really take off in the area only after the AY project was created. And to the extent that construction had been taking place in the area before that, I give much credit, either directly or indirectly, to FCR for projects like the Atlantic Mall and Terminal Mall (those places made living in the area more palatable). While certain private, large-scale development was taking place (i.e. the Daily News building, now apartments…though one could argue that this was linked to the AY project and future value of the site, etc.), few developers had the capital or the will to build over the AY platform. FCR did what many others wanted to, but couldn’t. I’m glad something good is finally coming to that area.
