Filmmaker and actor Brian Crano and David Craig initially planned to buy a brownstone (or an apartment in one) when they moved from L.A. to Brooklyn. But after losing out on several places, they did a complete about-face and created a unique space in a totally generic new-construction building in Vinegar Hill, The New York Times reported.

They combined two one-bedroom apartments plus common hallway space on the top floor of a “developer’s special,” as the Times put it, then embarked on a gut renovation that included a new kitchen from Henrybuilt. They spent a total of $1,228,000 buying the space (including the hallway) and another $500,000 or so on the renovation.

Now they have more than 2,750 1,378 square feet of indoor space plus two roof decks for a total of about 2,300 1,298 square feet of outdoor space. They can see the sunrise and sunset, have fabulous views, and space for their two dogs.

Click through to the Times article to see lots of photos of the interior, which includes dark moody paint colors from Farrow & Ball and a kitchen that combines the rough with the refined in the form of reclaimed wood and marble. There is also colorful wallpaper from Flavor Paper and vintage seating from Holler & Squall.

We don’t know which building they bought in so the photo above just shows a street in Vinegar Hill with some new construction. What do you think of the space and the couple’s strategy?

  1. I think the inside turned out pretty cool, although agree they spent a lot… $1300 a sqft? I like how they painted the ceilings those dark colors.

What is that black thing above the kitchen hood though? A speaker? AC supply vent?

  2. Sorry to burst the bubble – the original article says “But rather than combining the 1,378-square-foot apartments into a single large space, they decided to try something less conventional.”
The apartments are 1378 combined, or 694 each.
You can see them on Streeteasy, at 102 Gold st, 6r and 6f.
So, how does the math look now?
