42 remsen street brooklyn heights 92014

We’re pretty sure that this new listing at 42 Remsen Street in Brooklyn Heights has the highest asking price of any half-brownstone to date. Located in a 26-foot-wide house, it’s a good-sized pad and has a lovely garden to boot. The parlor floor has some striking original details (hello, coffered ceilings!) but we’re not wild about how the kitchen integrates with the main parlor. The maintenance is $3,475 a month and the asking price is, hold onto your hats, $4,500,000.

  1. Are you kidding me — why would BHS agree to list it at that price? You only have 3 beds and 2.5 baths, people above you, and have to deal with a co-op board when for the same price range you can have a full 4-story brownstone (with rental income if you choose) nearby?

  2. Yeah Wall Street is the only thing I’ve ever thought made sense. Other than Brooklyn Heights, there’s nowhere within a 5-10 min commute of Wall Street where you can buy a single-family house for a comparable price, if at all.

But, much of Brooklyn Heights is a decent walk from transit, I find. 42 Remsen is 7-8 minutes from Borough Hall and ~6 min from Court St when the R tunnel reopens. 7-8 minutes longer on the 4/5 could take you all the way to Crown Heights, and everything in between like Fort Greene, and you can get single family homes for literally half Bk Heights prices. But there’s the old “don’t cross Court St” stereotype.

  3. Proximity to Manhattan (especially Wall Street, where I’m sure a lot of rich bankers who live in the heights work), it’s pretty, safe, and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Areas nearby like Cobble Hill aren’t perfect either- barely any park space, having to rely on the F/G trains
