A Stop Work Order has been issued at this Bed-Stuy construction site at 726 Monroe Street on Friday because neighbors complained that an excavator had smashed into their building. One neighbor told NY1, “the lady told me that the whole wall shook. She came downstairs and said the building is smashed. So I went upstairs, the whole wall is smashed in. It took the whole sheet rock and pushed it all in.” According to NY1, when authorities arrived the excavator was leaning against the building.

The building was purchased in November for $565,000. It has seven open violations, five of them because the existing building was out of plumb and leaning towards the neighboring house, 728 Monroe Street. The developer, an LLC, has been fined over $20,000 by buildings department for failing to address the leaning structure. Neighbors appear to be back in their homes and it is hard to see any damage on the adjacent buildings through the construction fence.

Anyone have any more details?

Here’s the house that the developer was in the process of demolishing when the accident occurred.

  1. Totally agree Dave. They nitpick stupid stuff yet allow you to wrecking ball a house attached on both sides to others. Last week there was the picture of the one with the caterpillar/crane that had fallen to the side into the other attached house, sitting in a pile of rubble. If the building is attached or even not physically attached but wedged in-between 2 houses with no other clearance, they should be required to stick-dismantle it rather than the wrecking ball method. Ridiculous.

  2. In order to get a contractors license in this City all you need to do is buy Insurance and show that you know how to pay the sales tax. Yes that is all it takes to get a license.
No proof that you know anything about construction, basic engineering or even protecting your workers or neighbors….so long as you have insurance that will take care of that.
More & more all City agencies are just revenue collectors.
