We are sad to report the amazing and unusual interiors planned for the Steelworks Loft conversion at 76 North 4th Street in Williamsburg will not be happening after all. Now that the building has changed owners and is a rental rather than condos, AvroKo is no longer designing the interiors, which originally had kitchen cabinetry resembling iceboxes, beams salvaged from the site, and other reminders of the building’s past as a steel factory in the 1930s.

new teaser page for the building shows a few tiny thumbnails with less expensive finishes that are more typical of rentals in the area, such as a kitchen with dark wood cabinetry and white subway tile.

Leasing starts this fall, according to developer Cayuga Capital — and fall is almost here. Construction is coming along nicely, with more work on the lobby, roof, and interiors set to happen in the next three weeks or so, said the developer. A sign advertising retail space for rent went up on the building in November, and new signs tout forthcoming apartments.

The building will have 83 luxury rentals, ranging from studios to three-bedrooms. The new teaser site lists typically Williamsburg amenities, including a bocce court, roof deck with BBQs, vegetable garden, private rooftop cabanas, gas fireplaces, a library and a parking garage with ZipCar access.

Although architect Gene Kaufman started the building’s conversion, the new architects of record are Hustvedt Cutler Architects.

The building will not be called the “Lebowski,” as reported previously by some outlets. The new official name of the building is Lewis Steel.

Jake Toll, the son of Toll Brothers’ chairman Robert Toll, is codeveloping the project with Cayuga. MNS will rep the development.

What do you think of the exterior, particularly the new windows and the addition on the top?
