The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corp. has released 14 proposed designs for the two remaining housing developments on Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, the focus of a controversy over affordable housing in the park. The proposals will be discussed at a board meeting today, reported The Wall Street Journal, and the winner will be chosen around the end of the year. Community groups who oppose the development are planning a protest outside the meeting, according to a story in Curbed. Said the Journal:

Park officials said they were hopeful the quality of the proposals would help refocus the community conversation from a testy debate over the de Blasio administration’s requirement that developers dedicate at least 30 percent to affordable housing.

Increased park revenue from rising rents and condo sale prices mean only 70 percent of the housing originally planned for these two sites is needed to support the park, according to the story. Rather than decrease the size of the buildings by 30 percent, park officials agreed to Mayor de Blasio’s request to add affordable housing.

If a lawsuit requesting a second environmental review is resolved, construction could start around the end of next year.

For now, we have only three renderings published by the Journal. As soon as all 14 proposals are available, we will publish and link to them.

Update: All 14 proposals can viewed here on Brooklyn Bridge Park Corp.’s website. What do you think of them?

  1. These designs are so incredibly boring. I had to drink three cups of coffee to keep myself awake in order to view them all. They make the proposed towers for Atlantic Yards look really good.

Does anybody at these architectural firms ever actually consider the context of the neighborhood where the buildings will be located when doing these designs?
