856 washington avenue prospect heights

Trader Joe’s is supposedly planning to open in the old Greenpoint Savings Bank building at 856 Washington Avenue between Lincoln Place and Eastern Parkway, according to an anonymous source in the neighborhood who blabbed to FIPS. Apparently the Capital One there now is closing.

As well, Key Food across the street will become a Duane Reade, the source told FIPS. Trader Joe’s does love an old bank, as FIPS points out — its Cobble Hill location is in the former South Brooklyn Savings Institution on Court Street. What do you think? Have you heard anything?

  1. I agree with this location being accessible to folks in Bed Stuy only to an extent, at least as far as public transportation goes. The nearest train station directly linking to Bed Stuy that makes sense to people going grocery shopping is the A/C Clinton-Washington Ave line. Walking from Washington Ave and Fulton Street to Washington Ave and, essentially, Eastern Parkway/Lincoln Pl. is a good 15-20 minutes walk. Yes, you could hop on the 45 at Washington and Atlantic, but that seems to be a bit much to go grocery shopping, even if its TJ’s! As far as parking goes for folks wishing to drive, this is a disaster waiting to happen as parking is already scarce in the area. That said, I’d be thrilled if the reports are true!

  2. It’s hard to think of real estate that would be suitable for a TJ’s in FG/CH but that would be my first choice. Can we please have just one more in Bed Stuy then? Maybe Bedford Ave?
North/South public transportation from the CH area is a lot less convenient/frequent than going towards downtown. If I lived in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill I would still end up at Court St.
