Workers Dismantle Illegal Addition at 53 Bridge Street in Dumbo

by

After four years of DOB actions, the illegal five-story addition perched on top of the long-stalled warehouse conversion at 53 Bridge Street in Dumbo finally appears to be coming down. When we passed by recently, the building looked three stories shorter than before.

Conversion work restarted a few months ago, but the DOB slapped the property with three partial stop work orders in March, all of which required the addition to be demolished. The DOB first ordered landlord Joshua Guttman to take down the addition in 2010.

The developer scrapped residential plans last year and is moving forward with an office conversion, ground floor retail and parking for 17 cars, according to Schedule A filings. The conversion began nearly a decade ago under controversial architect Robert Scarano, but NSC Architecture became the architect of record last year.
