admiral's row 2013

The Brooklyn Navy Yard has released its third request for proposals to demolish the decaying houses at Admiral’s Row and build a supermarket and retail, Crain’s reported. The Navy Yard’s Economic Development Corporation dropped the developers behind the two previous winning proposals, PA Associates and then Blumenfeld Development Group.

The nonprofit organization estimates that the redevelopment of the six-acre plot would cost $100,000,000 and generate 500 jobs. Navy Yard CEO David Ehrenberg told Crain’s that the area “qualifies as a food desert” and desperately needs a supermarket. Developing Admiral’s Row would add 127,000 square feet of office and industrial space, in addition to the ground floor supermarket. Bidders for the new RFP will also get to submit plans to build on the 1.67-acre Sands Street site next to Admiral’s Row, an option that wasn’t included in previous RFPs. One of the houses and the historic lumber shed will be restored as part of the RFP, and unfortunately, the rest of the houses will be razed, according to Crain’s.
