Brownstoner Upstate: Hungry on the Hudson

We’re in the throes of Hudson Valley Restaurant Week, which started March 10 and continues through March 23. This year, some 180-plus restaurants in the Hudson Valley are participating, and they’re offering three-course prix-fixe dinners for $29.95 and lunches for $20.95 (reservations strongly recommended). That constitutes rock-bottom prices for many of these fine dining establishments. So this week, we thought it would be fun to take a little house/restaurant tour of the Hudson Valley, focusing not only on cool properties, but where to find tasty food, as well.

Lime green isn’t normally the first color that springs to mind when thinking about Victorian exteriors, but sure. Why not? It kind of works for us here. The bright Victorian in question is located in the Dutchess County village of Rhinebeck, east of the Hudson right on the river. The property is currently set up as a two-family, which might work for you. Or, it could be converted back into a single-family. Walking distance to some great Rhinebeck stuff, including the Terrapin Restaurant, which some consider to be one of the best restaurants in the Hudson Valley. We could’ve chosen from many of the nice homes for sale right in the Ulster County village of Saugerties, where the Diamond Mills Tavern is located, but we went for this gorgeous country/chic farmhouse out in the town of Saugerties, instead. Why? Well, look at it. It’s darn near perfect, and the price is right. And Diamond Mills is still only 7 miles away, completely worth the drive for both the food and the stunning view of the falls on the Esopus Creek from out the tavern windows. Beds: 2. Baths: 1. Even before we saw the listing description of this waterfront Queen Anne in Newburgh, we thought, “Oh! It looks like a wedding cake!” It’s surrounded by some of the best eye-candy houses that Newburgh has to offer, and it’s less than a mile and a half away from El Solar Cafe on Broadway. We haven’t been to this particular Latin restaurant, but we’ve heard it’s one of the best around. Don’t let its location fool you. Beds: 4. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 2,191. Lot Size: .08 acres. Est. Okay, so the price might be over a million, but keep in mind that this property in the Ulster County hamlet of Milton consists of three separate houses (all very nice looking from the outside, at least) on 5 acres. And that view of the Hudson from the pool might just make it worth the price, not to mention the fact that it’s got its own pond. The house is just a stone’s throw from the Buttermilk Inn and Spa, where Henry’s at the Farm is located.
