The William Tubby designed Queen Anne brick house at 131a Cambridge Place failed to sell at $1,995,000 when it was listed with broker Jerry Minksy earlier this year. Now it’s back with Corcoran and a lower asking price of $1,650,000. Still, the ask is not exactly peanuts considering the estate condition house needs a complete overhaul. It’s also narrow at 15 feet and would best work as a single family, in our opinion.

Nonetheless, it’s got beaucoup original architect-designed details, including some intriguing quirks you don’t see every day, such as angled walls in the parlors, tons of built-ins, and other unique Tubby designs such as the mantels and stairs. (The listing mentions “sparkling original chandeliers” but they appear to date from the ’30s or ’40s, not 1894.)

What do you make of it?

  1. I was at the open house. Adorable house but in terrible shape with too many years of neglect; it requires almost gut reno from beam replacements, etc… Plus, the big issue for me is the size — it’s clearly for midgets. Perfect for a very small creative family that wants to invest another million to get to par… I remember looking at this house 2 years ago for 900k and thought it was expensive then…

  2. Yes, halve wit, it does make you wonder, doesn’t it? I’m always amused by the florid language the realtors use, especially to disguise problems. Yes, why live with someone else’s improvements when you can spend your own fortune completely overhauling and updating a neglected and obsolete wreck? I didn’t see any bathroom or kitchen photos, you can guess why. And those sparkling chandeliers “unlike any you have ever seen”, outside of a cheesy banquet hall, perhaps. Sorry for being catty, this rhapsodic palaver just made me laugh. Good luck to all concerned.
