Cafe Habana is expanding its operations in Brooklyn with Habana To Go. It’s located at 690 Fulton in Fort Greene, right across the street from Habana Outpost, the chain’s solar powered restaurant with a huge outdoor space that is now closed for the season. Habana To Go will offer takeout and delivery, according to the sign posted on its window. No word on when it will open, but it looks like they are close to ready.

The sign painted on the building above the shop, in case you are wondering, refers to Habana Works, which programs activities at Habana Outpost. Or, in the words of its website, it provides “free, hands-on programs that celebrate urban environmentalism as a means of contributing to an educated and engaged community in downtown Brooklyn.” Click through to the jump for a closeup of the takeout shop. GMAP

I’m assuming that building isn’t landmarked otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to paint that on the side of the building. Could be worse, they could have added a #

  • Waiting for obligatory anti-gentrification rant from long-time community activist. Please insert here.

  • I’m not anti-gentrification, but maybe I’m just NIMBY, because I HATE Habana Outpost. The food sucks (multiple friends reported explosive food poising), it’s expensive, there are multiple bouncers standing by a velvet rope, and it is noisy as all hell. The best part of the end of summer is the closing of Habana Outpost.

  • dude, if they have the steak sandwich like the original one in downtown manhattan u’m in huge trouble. i think the labor involved is a huge part to the execution of this restaurant, so i can see how the outpost might fall flat. controlled chaos seems to be how they operate.

“hands-on programs that celebrate urban environmentalism as a means of contributing to an educated and engaged community in downtown Brooklyn” – - i have no idea what that means. a nonprofit to celebrate? tax free parties?

  • That Habana Works thing has been painted on the building for a long, long time. Also, the billboard of Biggie on the west side of that building? The one that people are always taking pictures of? Yeah that’s actually a Habana advertisement too, so please stop Instagramming it.

Anyway, last I heard Habana wanted to sell mojitos to go from this shop, which seemed like a freaking horrible idea, so I just hope they cut back on those ambitions. Habana is really a nuisance.
