Fun with number 12 today

Did you catch the clock at 12:12 today, which is 12/12/12? Either just after midnight or after noon? We know a number (no pun intended, ha!) of people geeking out over that today – hope you got to join in the fun if this sort of thing tickles you.

No Longer Empty’s How Much Do I Owe You? opens tonight!

We’re pretty psyched about this installation, How Much Do I Owe You?, which opens tonight in the lobby of the Bank Of Manhattan building on Queens Plaza North just across from the Dutch Kills Green. The opening reception is tonight from 7-9pm and if you go, you are in for a real treat. Be sure to check out the downstairs vault and the upstairs mezzanine for moving picture-related works. We are also fond of the static pieces by Ghost of a Dream – The Price of Happiness – and Erika Harrsch’s US Dollar Kites and Mao Dragon Kite. If you go, we’d love to know what you think! Shoot us an email of tweet us at @queensnycity.

RESOBOX in LIC is cool and an artistic resource

We had a chance to visit RESOBOX, a Japanese art gallery and cultural center in LIC, run by Fumio Tashiro and Takashi Izekawa. Here, you can have tea, take a class, or view and/or buy art. Most recently the opening reception for the joint exhibition of Carla Lobmier and Mary Burton Wheeler took place there and we were delighted to attend. We definitely look forward to checking it out some more.

The Jackson Heights Community Orchestra debuts tonight, too!

Catch the first ever performance of the Jackson Heights Community Orchestra tonight at 7pm, at the Community United Methodist Church. The all-volunteer, 18-piece ensemble will be performing Handel’s Overture to the Messiah, Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite, Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances Suite#1 and a couple of holiday songs with local lyric soprano Jayne Skoog. Suggested donation is $10.

Break it down – STOP. Rebus time.

While we were at The Queens Kickshaw today, we saw they had created a rebus on their chalkboard/sandwich board outside. Can you decipher the rebus? Hint: it’s a drink they make at the cafe .
