Plans to turn part of the Sumner Armory, now used for a homeless shelter, into a community recreation spot, inched forward this week, DNAinfo reported. The City’s Department of Homeless Services said it would perform a feasibility study and consider the proposal, as long as local Community Board Three pays for the study. Bed Stuy pols formed a committee to improve the facility in 2011, and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz promised $2,000,000 to help with cleanup. The proposal calls for moving the homeless shelter to the second floor and using the extensive first-floor drill hall for recreation. The Sumner Armory was built in 1891 and designed by architect Rudolphe Lawrence Daus, according to the blog Save Bedford Stuyvesant. It is located on Marcus Garvey and Jefferson.
