The City has OK’d the expansion of McCarren Park by 33,800 square feet, DNAinfo reported. The new greenspace will come out of a road slicing through the park. Union Avenue between Driggs and North 12th Street, above, will be transformed into a plaza that will connect two parts of the park. The Parks Department may close off the street and turn it into a temporary plaza as early as summer of 2014 while it seeks funding for a permanent reconstruction, the story said. The Department of Transportation and the Open Space Alliance are helping with the project.
