The new outpatient facility Methodist is planning on building in Park Slope will be large, but hospital execs promised local residents the style will be in keeping with the surrounding blocks. “It’s not going to be a glass and steel building,” said a spokeswoman for the hospital quoted by Brooklyn Paper. The seven-story-high u-shaped building will replace properties the hospital already owns on 5th Street, 6th Street and 8th Avenue. The facility will offer surgery, endoscopy, a cancer center, urgent care and meeting space. Hill said the hospital needs more space for its growing number of patients, partly because of problems and threatened closures at other Brooklyn hospital such as Long Island College Hospital in Cobble Hill and Interfaith in Bed Stuy. Neighbors said they feared more traffic, construction noise and the loss of old buildings. “It’s an aggressive development in an extremely precious neighborhood – it’s uncalled for and unwarranted,” said Philippa Garson, who lives in a condo on 5th Street across from the proposed development. The New York Daily News said the hospital will require a zoning change from the City to allow it to build as high as eight stories. The area is not landmarked. Above, Methodist Hospital today.

  1. This doesn’t sound promising. I guess they can’t raze some of their existing ugly buildings… Is it feasible to just open another center down on 4th Ave or even beyond?
