Groundswell is embarking on a public mural project this summer. Through a summer leadership program, youth artists ages 14 to 24 will create eight public art works across New York City, four of which are located in Brooklyn. The first project is titled Recovery Diaspora. It will be a series of murals addressing healing and recovery in four New York City communities impacted by Hurricane Sandy, including Red Hook, Staten Island, Coney Island, and the Rockaways. Another mural will go up on the Atlantic Avenue Underpass (pictured), which is due for a redesign. Finally, artists will take on a project called Livable Streets Pitkin Avenue, a mural which highlights community assets in Brownsville. Work will begin on the murals in early August, and Groundswell scheduled unveilings for mid to late August and early September. You can follow Groundswell on Facebook for updates on all the projects.
