What we are reading this week about decorating and renovating old houses:

prospect-heights-lr-052313Refinery29 takes us inside the beach-inspired Prospect Heights pad of Surf Bazaar store owner Bethany Mayer. Check out the way the designs in the rug and pillows echo the inlaid floor. It’s all very casual rustic in a historic envelope. Perhaps the all-white paint is supposed to remind us of sand? Click through to the story for some detail shots, such as a mantel closeup.

Southern interior designer and editor Alecia Stevens specializes in neo-traditional or  traditional but contemporary interiors. We’d like to throw ourselves down on the bulbous green printed couch in the breakfast nook above and or read a book on the low-slung sofa in the living room with the Moroccan rug.

The owner of this Harlem townhouse on West 126th Street, Jonathan Hatcher, bought it for $100,000 in 1988. He also owns four other townhouses in the row. The traditional-with-a-twist decor includes ceilings painted with metallic paint and a colorful monogrammed patio in the backyard. The house is on the market for $1,925,000.
