Maybe a house in 1996 that had been last renovated 20-30 yrs earlier could get by without much work. But now that same house was last touched almost 40-50 yrs ago. Definitely more likely it needs a lot of systems work – which means more likely to take some walls down. Putting in recessed lighting is optional.
