The New York Daily News reported on the latest salvo in the battle over the closure of Cobble Hill’s Long Island College Hospital: In court filings, state officials claimed delaying the closure will threaten patient safety. Not so, said union officials and doctors. LICH has been losing about $1 million a week since the temporary restraining order took effect, and case reserves will be gone in 45 days, according to hospital officials. Doctors said contracts with prior owner Continuum are unnecessarily draining resources to the tune of $2 million per month. “Every day our coalition keeps LICH open for care, we are saving lives,” said the head of the nurses union.
