A tipster forwarded along the news that the Celeste Diner on Tillary Street has closed after 25 years in business. He said, “I’m guessing the Concord Village Board think they can now get way more for the suddenly primo tourist-trap location than the diner people were willing to pay to renew their lease.” The restaurant occupied the ground-floor retail space of the co-op building on the corner of Adams and Tillary streets. A sign on the window of Celeste reads, “Thanks for 25 years Brooklyn, Concord Village has other plans!!” so our tipster may be right. GMAP

  1. Very unfortunate for this establishment to close down. I know the place very well, had dined there for over 15 year, became close to the owners as a customer. One of the few last affordable and clean places to eat, those who want an upscale eating establishment are going to be the first ones to complain about price and service. The owner who was there for over 20 years will be missed, he is a true man who came to this country without asking for handouts, worked over 16 hour days and opened one of the most successful diner/coffee shops in Brooklyn. I recall that at one point he had sold the business, it didn’t succeed with the new owners, that Concord Village called him back to take over again. One thing I will never forget how they were a safe haven for the pedestrians and law enforcement crossing over the bridges during 9-11, offering refreshments, restroom use, and phone service to those who were in need.
