Rent Picture Mixed in Brooklyn

The per-square-foot price of a rental in Brooklyn increased 19.2 percent in December from $30.22 to $36.01 compared to the same month a year ago, a report out today from Douglas Elliman found. The numbers apply only to North and Northwest Brooklyn, not the entire borough. At the same time, the median rental price increased 1.4 percent, from $2,600 to $2,637. But in a sliver of good news for renters, the average rental price decreased year over year, from $2,958 to $2,880, or 2.6 percent. From November 2012 to December of the same year, the price per square foot rose 5.8 percent to $36.01, while average and median rent prices decreased 5 percent and 2.3 percent, respectively. So how much can you expect to pay if you’re looking? In December, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment was $2,486. A two-bedroom was $3,325.
