Fridays at 11, the Upstater website brings you a selection of houses for sale or rent in upstate New York. Today, our two favorites of the week: a contemporary rental in Saugerties and an Italianate villa for sale in Hudson.

1421 Route 212, Saugerties

We imagine this audience will have strong opinions about this Saugerties contemporary, for rent for $1,100 a month. Not everyone wants to live in a Richard Serra sculpture. This house was designed by Ben Ryuki Miyagi, and you can see more examples of his work here.

Whatever you think of the exterior, the inside is bright and clean. The location has some perks: next door is the delicious New World Home Cooking. The ad we found on Craigslist breaks down what one could expect pay in utilities.

39 South 5th Street, Hudson

This is our car-free country house of the week, a circa-1860 Italianate in Hudson that reads like a grand country manor but is accessible by public transit — the Amtrak to Hudson.

The kitchen has had a serious modern update, but much of the house retains original detail: parquet floors, arched entryways, marble fireplaces, two piazzas. It’s around $100 per square foot. It’s on a small lot — less than a half-acre — but taxes are high because of the size: five bedrooms, three baths and 3,900 square feet. Expect to pay more than $10,000.
