Pizza Wars: Juliana’s to Open in “a Couple of Weeks”

Grimaldi’s hasn’t suffered from its half-block move last year to 1 Front Street. Crowds still line up mid-morning for its legendary pies. But starting later this month, the famous pizza restaurant will face some stiff competition from its own namesake, when Patsy Grimaldi opens Juliana’s in the old Grimaldi space at 19 Front Street. (A contractor told us the space would be ready to open “in a couple of weeks.”) Today, the New York Post reported the owner of Grimaldi’s has sued Juliana’s to prevent them from firing up the old coal oven, saying it would create “unfair competition.” Will there be enough tourists to go around?

  • Unfair competition?! What a joke; there’s more than enough business to go around.

  • Looking forward to trying it — if there is no line…

  • I am looking forward to them opening. As a resident of the neib – i find it very frustrating to have to wait in a huge line for great pizza (i love you front street pizza – but its just not the same) – or keep trying repetitively to call for take out. Juliana’s is a welcome addition to the already restaurant starved (pun intended) hood..

  • Grimaldi’s has gone downhill pretty seriously since the move, both in food and atmosphere. It’s now pulsing LED lights, flat screen tv’s and really lackluster pizza. How many more years can they sail on the guidebooks? I guess a while considering Little Italy gets by mobbed. Looking forward to Juliana’s…

  • Grimaldi’s has been in a long, slow, secular decline. Not enough of a decline to say that the pizza is foul, but long enough and steep enough to lead us to cry out at the long lines of uninformed tourists waiting outside: “what are you thinking? It is not that good…” Friends don’t let friends eat pizza at Grimaldi’s. The unfair competition comment is beyond ridiculous. Check in for the story as recited on Chowhound and other places on how these guys refused to pay their rent and later had to move. We can’t wait for Julianna’s.

  • Who owns the actual coal oven? Did it get moved to the new Grimaldi’s or is it in the old Juliana building?

  • Can’t wait! Grimaldi’s hasn’t been up to par since their move (the oven isn’t seasoned enough) and have not cared much for it anymore. Dumbo is tourist central, there is always a line outside Grimaldi’s (and Ignazios). There are plenty of tourist to go around. I think Grimaldi’s is just nervous because Juliana’s is going to be amazing and the long line will wrap around Juliana’s instead of 1 front.
