Pardon Me For Asking says the empty Scarano structure at 165 West 9th Street in Carroll Gardens is the proposed location for a homeless shelter. The ten-unit residential building was constructed in 2002. PMFA notes that the project was self-certified by Robert Scarano, who, of course, is no longer permitted to file applications with the city. A Bronx-based nonprofit proposes a configuration for 170 adults, but it seems community residents may put up a fight. A nearby business owner on Court Street called this “the worst thing that could possibly happen to businesses with an already fragile economy.” CB6 District Manager Craig Hammerman says the board will set up a public meeting to learn more about the proposal firsthand. The site, just off Court Street, is around the corner from popular eatery Buttermilk Channel. GMAP

  1. Housing Solutions USA plans to operate a shelter for individuals at 9th Street but they have no experience running shelters for individuals. They currently only operate shelters for families which are much easier to operate than shelters for individuals and don’t have many of the issues that go along with shelters for individuals. Their lack of experience creates too much of a risk to the community because a poorly run shelter for individuals will inflict great harm to the community and its residents. Go to their website at http://www.housingsolutionsusa.org/housing-programs#tab-1 and you’ll see that every one of their shelters is identified as being for families, not individuals. So it’s either true that they have no experience with shelters for individuals or they are lying to the other communities about the true nature of their current shelters. Either answer should disqualify them from operating a shelter in our community.

  3. i get the dreadful feeling that whenever you see the word nonprofit here, you should hear the word vampire. Bloomberg fired this guy, who now knows perfectly well how to get paid by being in the middle of such revenue streams. I thought he was supposed to have a legit job with a real nonprofit (doe fund?).

Sorry, i’m skeptical that this is about homeless, as opposed to a money making opportunity. Otherwise knows as a win-win. “Hey, i end homelessness, get rich, its a win-win. ”
