A group called Autonomous Organization is seeking $18,000 on Kickstarter to fund the build-out of a free community space called The Base in a Bushwick storefront at 1009 Broadway near Myrtle Avenue. Plans include chicken farming workshops, legal assistance for renters, meeting space for worker groups, free dinners, a free market, a tool-lending library, boxing and kung fu, and an English-Spanish language skills exchange. “The Base will be a storefront in Bushwick, Brooklyn for the proliferation of free resources,” says the project description. “You will see within its walls: organizing, resources for free living, skill sharing and workshops, a library and local research. Fostered by the needs and ideas of its users, participants are invited to lead their own projects, request skills and aid, and locate the tools they need for the struggles they are engaged in.” The plan is to open in November. So far, donors have pledged $820, and the funding deadline is Oct. 14.
