The New York Landmarks Conservancy posted pictures of a recent tour of Prospect Park’s under-construction Lakeside Center, a $74 million project years in the making. The massive project includes the removal of the old Wollman rink, the restoration of the landscape around the lake, the addition of two new rinks, the restoration of original ornamental retaining walls and ironwork, enlarging the lake, and adding three new acres of lawn. Finally, the old recreational facility will be replaced with a state-of-the-art new one. (All the plans are detailed really well in this Youtube video.) This is the first major construction project for the park in 50 years. The project has fallen behind schedule but according to the Conservancy construction is scheduled to wrap this October. Update: In October, Music Island and the Esplanade will open, which are finishing up construction now. The rest of Lakeside, specifically the rinks, buildings and berm, will not be finished until next fall.
