The Department of Transportation is starting work to extend the bike lane on Third Street through Gowanus and up to Carroll Gardens. Currently, there’s only a westbound bike lane from Third Avenue to Smith Street, but the eastbound lane has been marked. An 11-foot shared lane with a 9-foot parking lane will be installed eastbound from Smith Street to Bond Street, a 5-foot protected bike lane with a 9-foot parking lane will be installed eastbound from Bond to Third Avenue, and a 5-foot bike lane curbside will be installed in both directions from Third to Fourth Avenue (pictured). The DOT also just installed markings for the future Plaza Street bike lane. Both additions were approved by Community Board Six in April.
