When Key Foods on 10th Avenue announced earlier this month that it would close by the end of June, it took Windsor Terrace residents by surprise and, despite years of complaints, most people were upset. Nor were many of them happy that the grocery store–the only one in the area–would be replaced by a Walgreens. Now a local, the owner of Babbo’s Books (1996-era website alert!) on Prospect Park West, has put up a petition against a drug store moving in. Or if a drug must move in, it should have a full grocery store. “Don’t come into our neighborhood! Or, if you must, make sure this location has a full grocery store! That is what the neighborhood needs. Anything less and we will boycott.” There’s lots more anti-Walgreen’s propaganda to behold, including the possibility that its arrival could put to mom-and-pop drug stores out of business. As of last night, 254 people had signed the petition.

  1. crownlfc: What ethnicity would that be tinged with?

Regarding Walgreens, expect them to steamroll through NYC, as they are doing all over the U.S. They bought Duane Reade a couple of years ago to get a foothold here, I would presume.
