We received an email this morning from a parent at P.S. 9 in Prospect Heights. Earlier this week the school was notified by DOE that because the percentage of low-income families at the school had dipped to 59.1, just below the 60 percent cut-off, it was losing $360,000 in federal funding. Evidently, a state program will be able to make up $200,000 of that, but the remaining difference will mean four teachers being laid off. The PTO has raised $13,000 in the last few days but is now desperately reaching out to the community at large. Donations can be made through the P.S. 9 website or by check made out to “PS 9 PTO” and brought or sent to: PS 9 PTO, 80 Underhill Ave, Room 132A, Brooklyn, NY 11238.
