Next Tuesday the DOT will present a proposal for a shared bicycle route along Lafayette Avenue, in response to a big community campaign to do so. This January, Lafayette residents approached CB2 and proposed widening painted crosswalks, adding signage for cars and bikes to yield to pedestrians, and an eastbound bike lane from Fulton Street to at least Carlton Avenue. (See the full campaign here.) On Tuesday they’ll see how much of their plans will be brought into reality. If you’re interested, the meeting is Tuesday, June 19, 6pm at St. Francis College, 180 Remsen Street.

  1. “why can’t cars just use other streets?”

“why can’t people just use other sidewalks?”

Streets are for transportation – not just for automobiles. Complete streets (including bus and/or bicycle lanes) are a fair and common-sense way to use taxpayer dollars in a city where most people don’t own private cars.
