In the wake of the demolition at 96 Lefferts Place (above), the Landmarks Preservation Commission rejected the recently proposed effort to landmark Lefferts Place. Today The Local reported that the LPC decided the area does not meet the criteria of a historic district, mostly due to the architectural adjustments on the block and, as LPC rep Lisi de Bourbon says, “empty lots or other intrusions that disrupt the cohesion of the streetscape.” As the Local points out, “That doesn’t bode too well for a concurrently proposed Clinton Hill South Historic District, would be bounded by Washington, Classon, and Atlantic Avenues and Fulton Street, which covers much of the same territory as the rejected zone.” It’s worth noting that the yellow Civil War era home at 70 Lefferts was individually landmarked after the threat of demolition back in 2006.

  1. how stupid. that block is definitely landmark quality. i bet a lot of people fear what will be built at 96 lefferts and on the huge lot next door. wouldn’t landmark designation ensure that whatever is built is contextual?
