Every Friday at 11:00, theĀ Upstater website brings you a selection of properties for rent and sale within three hours north (and a little bit east and/or west) of New York City. This week: summer bungalow rentals.

Most of the Dirty Dancing-style 1950s bungalow colonies have transformed into co-ops (or a few into low-income housing), but most of them still have Saturday night entertainment, communal dinners and swimming holes. Bungalows tend to be modest — small, un-winterized, not overly renovated — and cheap, with low yearly fees. We’ve had two over on Upstater for a mere $6,000 each.

Pine Lake Park

One of the closest bungalow colonies to New York City is Pine Lake Park: 50 acres near Cortlandt Manor in Westchester County. They have a lake, kids play area, tennis courts, and social hall.

The rental season is May 15 through October 15, and two-bed rentals start at $2,200 for the season.

More on the jump…

Lake Huntington Summer Community

The Lake Huntington Summer Community describes itself as ā€œa warm weather redoubt for generations of city dwellers looking for a fun, relaxing, affordable vacation.ā€ It has a lake, of course, and a pool, woods and fields, tennis and tree houses. You canĀ rent a place for as little as $650 a week, although the ones with the word ā€œquietā€ in the description give us pause about the potential loudness of the others. They write:Ā ā€œItā€™s retro (as in salsa and potlucks) and communal (most owners live in NYC so weā€™re used to schmoozing). You can take or leave the many activities such as pot luck dinners, talent shows, movie night, game night, pool, lake and field days, dances, bonfires, sing-a-longs, and spooky nights.ā€Ā

Lansmans

Lansmans is now a co-op community like most ex-colonies, but they maintain aĀ website for those who want to reminisce about the olden days. The current iteration of Lansmans has “100 beautiful wooded acres off Murphy Road inĀ Woodbourne, NY. The approximately 85 summer cottages are situated throughout the grounds. Lansmanā€™s sports a grand in-ground heated pool, four tournament tennis courts, full court basketball and paddleball courts, baseball and sports fields, the premier summer day camp, a casino and restaurant, weekend shows, a card room, full time maintenance staff and much much more.ā€

They haveĀ bungalows for rent or sale including a one-bedroom bungalow with deckā€“$3,750 for the season.

Buffalo Colony

The Buffalo Colony, also inĀ Woodburne, N.Y. has 30 units spread out over 103 acres. Amenities includeĀ a swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts and a communal building. The bungalows themselves are larger than those in some other colonies, and there’s alsoĀ Ā an early 19th centuryĀ schoolhouse. They haveĀ bungalowsĀ for rent andĀ for sale, including the schoolhouse!
