Here’s a somewhat raw-looking loft space in one of Dumbo’s less-hyped residential buildings, 25 Jay Street. There’s a separate bedroom in this unit and a teeny-tiny area for a sleeping loft. The kitchen finishes are pretty bland, but the apartment gets points for the exposed ceiling and dark wood floors. As for the monthly damage: $3,950.

  1. @deadonarrival: Since we had the ground floor they thought they could charge us the same commercial rent they would charge a chain store or some other deep-pocketed corporation. The landlord insisted he had others interested in the space at that price. We moved. He had an empty space for the next 3 years with ZERO interest. He finally rented to a coffeeshop, for pretty much what we had been paying.
    PS: “deadonarrival”? Cool name!

  2. I had a studio space in this building for 20 years before residential conversions and old-fashioned greed emptied the building (We were told my studio mates and I could stay if we paid $60,000 for our ground floor). There were a number of illegal live/work spaces upstairs, but most of those artists and artisans complained about living across the street from the humming Con Ed transformers. Other than that, it’s a great old pre-Civil War building with massive timbers, and solidly built. This would make a nice live/work space for a single artist, but for that price I’ve seen much better spaces in better locations in Dumbo. Still, the artists I know have either moved, wish they could move from there, or would never consider Dumbo anymore. It’s past its “artsy” stage and it’s a stroller neighborhood like any other now. I could imagine this rental is right for a trust-funder wanting to appear creative by living in a loft.
