The Post reports that an online brouhaha erupted on the Park Slope Parents message board over whether ice cream vendors should not be allowed in Prospect Park. The way it’s framed in the Post, the debate revolves around parents not wanting to say “no” when their kids spy the tasty treats being sold in the park. Here’s a quote: “‘I should not have to fight with my children every warm day on the playground just so someone can make a living!’ the poster wailed. ‘I too was at the 9th Street Playground on Monday, and one of the vendors just handed my 4-year-old an ice cream cone. I was furious.'” Some local parents say the debate is silly. And so do some of the nannies watching the kids of local parents: “Dixie Kissoon, a nanny who also took her charges to Harmony recently, wishes the worked-up moms and dads would just get a life. ‘They’re obnoxious,’ she said. ‘There’s no harm in this.'”

  1. “illegal vendors”??? Are you people nuts?? Jesus let somebody make a living they’re not peddling crack for God’s sake! And learn to say no to your kid get a grip. Youre probably more upset about YOUR park day being “ruined” than your kid bc half of you people go to the park to brush up on your socializing more than your children. Prepare your kid for the real word say NO or be a sport and let em eat the damn ice cream how long does it take away from “activity” and “socializing”?? Yuppies are real head cases! Coocoo!

  2. I really don’t care all that much about illegal vendors in playgrounds. But it is a “legitimate” complaint which was sensationalized in the Post and now here again. People arent making this out to be the biggest deal, all anyone is doing is bitching a bit – originally on a forum that is essentially FOR bitching.
What I do care about (although not sure why) is the ridiculous hypocritical sentiments expressed here. (Even though I know it is mainly from liberal guilt mixed with economic envy and probably some boredem)
This board and many others are filled with all manner of whinning about tiny, insignificant slights and annoyances…big strollers, bike lanes, delivery menus, snow removal, building heights, curb cuts dog waste, subway riders, rear extensions , taxi drivers, lot line windows, taxi passengers, chains, brick color, traffic, coffee prices, bank branches, kids, etc etc
Yet when it comes to PS and many other wealthy enclaves in this city, (or worse those places combined with any of the above,) the same people who see no problem with their endless complaining all of a sudden are just appalled at the fact that someone dare have a complaint.

  3. yeah, lets follow in the steps of the baby boomer and post boomer generations “time honored traditions” and further the most obese society in the history of the planet.

lets downplay the health effects of smoking while we’re at it. and, since they never paid that much attention to their kids, lets just let them roam free.

sure, maybe park slopers are whiners, likely entitled liberals, but they care about their kids and spend a lot of time with them. to whine about being trolled in a park playground by (does it really matter who?) isn’t because they are checked out. its because they care and don’t want their kids as messed up as the previous generation.

not that it would be a difficult standard to exceed.

  5. “The legal vs illegal vendor debate is bogus – no one really cares about that.”

Who cares – I do. I pay f’ing taxes and fees to do just about everything in this city. Just going to the park, I have to pay for the zoo and the carousel and field permits and tennis courts and dozens of other things.

so guess what, get out of here with your ices and churros and bogus handbags and all the other $hit being sold illegally in parks, subways and elsewhere tax, regulation and fee free.

I dont even get the debate? No one is advocating the police re-allocate resources to an ice patrol but damn I get fined for putting my garbage out an hour early or hundred of other inane regulations; so why is this different?

  7. Its everyone’s park, and i know new yorkers love a deal on the down low, but i support keeping the parks what they are without a carnival atmosphere.

When it comes to food it just shouldn’t be tolerated. Not churros on the subway, not ice, not anything. Even the “legal” street vendors are a nuisance (not to mention disgusting) but at least they are stationary and use plastic gloves – – – and you can avoid them if desired. I don’t really understand where the grey area is with regards to food. I’ve had more than my fair share of food poisoning in NYC over the years.

With regards to any illegal vendors in ALL parks that is the whole point of a park. One shouldn’t have to drive up to the mountains to avoid managing their kids like its six flags. Even if it were glow in the dark necklaces or Coach hand bags, or batteries for one dollar, it ruins the park experience for everyone – – i’m here to get away from that. Go to Canal street!!

It is unfortunate there are billions of poor people in the world, there are plenty of ways to help – but there is no need to push a carnival on me in the place we all go to get away from this stuff.
