Closing Bell: Date Set for PPW Medians

Today the Brooklyn Paper reported that construction of the Prospect Park West Medians will begin next week, starting Monday, April 23rd. DOT will install nine raised concrete islands next to crosswalks at nine different intersections along PPW. The islands will keep cars from double parking, increase visibility and give pedestrians easier access crossing the road.

  • I’ve noticed the dedicated bike paths in Manhattan are crazy filthy… is this because the street sweeper trucks don’t pass over them, but the trash still gets pushed over to curb?

  • Great pedestrian safety improvement.

  • no-permits

i wonder how the opponents feel about this? i think this pretty much makes the bike lane permanent. :P

  • Very nice.

Minard: What’s it to you? The people I know who actually live on PPW (including myself, excluding of course a few vocal residents of 9 PPW) tend to support the bike lane, especially now that it’s clear it’s perfectly safe.

It means nothing to me. I could not care less actually, but I do think that this mayor is a little out of control ignoring everyone but his sycophants and somehow finding the funds for his pet projects while crying budget poverty for everything else. I don’t know if the next mayor will remove these and the ones in Manhattan or not. Chances are that the next mayor will need the financial support of constituents and therefore I believe they will delete these dedicated bicycle lanes where they don’t make too much sense (Seventh Avenue) or where the local community doesn’t want them. And by local community I mean people who contribute to political campaigns.

  • While I have a lot of issues with his criminal (in)justice activities, I think Bloomberg has accomplished great things in making the city livable. My family love the bike lanes and the tree planting initiatives (both of which are in evidence in the rendering above). The city is a better place for them.

    • Please, Bloomberg is a PIMA, I can’t wait till he leaves office.

Because of Bloomberg we now have 3 trees in front of our building that we DID NOT want. Now we have to constantly clean up after the pigs that live in the neighborhood. Litter and cig butts get caught in the mulch, and we have to clean it. Why doesn’t Bloberg make smoking on the sidewalk illegal, maybe my tree pits will stay cleaner…The cement was cleaner and easier for us to take care of.
Sure the the whole concept of the trees look nice, but they should have installed a lip around the edge so litter doesn’t catch in it, and given us the gates around the trees, this has been one headache for us.
It would have been nice if they gave the LL a choice if we wanted trees or not, but this is more like a dictatorship, the city plants the trees in front of our property, yet we have to maintain them, and if we remove them, we get a fine…….Bloomberg- Hitler, same thing.

and now lets get to the tourist helicopters that our retarded mayor had re-instated…..so while he may have done some good things to our city, he has also done not so great things either. Over the BBP waterfront and Govenors Island is like a HELL with all the choppers flying about, what quality of life is that???

  • And I, on the other hand, agree with B’s criminal justice initiatives and think virtually everything else he’s touched (bike lanes, education, libraries, sidewalk bump-outs, parking lanes in the middle of the street) is pure crap. He’s leaving the city a worse place for his being here. The tree plantings are wonderful, except for the fact that in all but the rich neighborhoods, those plantings just accumulate garbage and weeds. Too bad longevity seems to run in his family.

  • Somewhere, some associate at Gibson Dunn is feverishly reviewing every case in which the planting of a tree was held to be arbitrary and capricious.

man, i don’t care what anyone says about bloomberg, but you’ll never have another mayor who is not caught up in the BS and worried about how he and his sticky fingered pals get paid first. The guys is competent capable and actually tries to make the city better. Sure, he has his pet projects, tries to ram stuff through the machine of waste and inefficiency, but it isn’t about pure corruption for once in the city’s history. So for all the crocodiles who haven’t been able to hunt in their swamp, don’t worry your pit will be back soon enough.

Initially i was staunchly against a bike lane used a few months out of the year…..how i want the whole park encircled with this. i really like it.

now the crazy jerk cyclists why yell at grandma, mom and baby crossing the street i could still do without…….

  • Is it some sort of coincidence that Bloomberg’s personal wealth more than doubled during a time of severe recession? That his pal Moskowitz has been able to build her Success school empire and ride roughshod over every public school that does not want her invading its territory? That B has pushed through many charter schools run by his hedge fund friends? That the cash-poor city was able to lobby for Ratner’s folly and grant them huge tax breaks and? That the Dept of Ed has gone through at least 6 or 7 major overhauls since Bloomberg took office … with little discernible improvement in pupil achievement? That we had the worst response to a major snowfall in decades? That young children’s bus routes were changed with hourlong delays during midwinter? That he hired a totally inept chief deputy mayor who screwed up big time in several ways and a schools chancellor who had absolutely no qualifications or “feel” for the job … both of whom he had to fire not long after they were hired.

The list could go on and on. Bloomie is just a little more subtle with his corruption than past mayors. The fact still remains that he bought all three elections, defied the will of the voters who had passed term limits, and is a bitter, nasty, vindictive individual with absolutely no sense of humor. If this is competence, the bar for that honor is being set are too low.
