Here we go again! The Times has a story about the debate du jour at the Park Slope Food Co-op, which involves this week’s vote on whether to hold another vote about boycotting Israeli products from the co-op. The main point of the article is that while some people are very passionate about the issue, many don’t give a fig: “The debate has splintered the membership, turned neighbor against neighbor and provoked threats of litigation. Yet above all, many people seem uninterested in, or even annoyed by, all the arguing. Their reactions point up how the co-op has evolved from a countercultural upstart into a neighborhood institution as conventional as children’s soccer leagues on Saturday morning.” One interesting point made in the story that we haven’t seen mentioned in other reports is that the co-op has often boycotted products from places and companies on political grounds, including South Africa and Chile. When we stopped by yesterday, there were people handing out fliers on the issue; some pro- and some anti-boycott. Let’s beat the co-op members to their own vote for the vote.
