The Post follows up on last week’s news about how American Stevedoring is no longer in charge of operations at the Red Hook container port and says the move indicates the city and Port Authority are going to try to resurrect plans to redevelop the piers. While a Port Authority spokesman denies that’s the case, The Post is basing its speculation on the deal that’s been struck with the replacement operator, Phoenix: “Phoenix Beverage Co., a beer distributor with no experience running docks, has just a one-year lease — proof that something is fishy, sources said. ‘Ships need to book years in advance. This has to do with real-estate interests,’ said Sandy Pope, head of Teamsters Local 805.” Another source, meanwhile, says that Phoenix is just “a holding pattern until the city and the Port Authority reignite the intensive development unveiled in 2003.” The old redevelopment plans called for building hotels and condos.
