Smith Street “Festival des Soupes”
Smith’s Street’s Restaurant Row is once again dedicating an autumn afternoon to an homage to everything from minestrone to avgolemono, from lobster bisque to mulligatawney, from mondongo to pumpkin, from matzoh ball to gumbo. Students from local public High School For International Studies will be selling tickets for 4 oz. “tastings” on the corners of Smith & President, Smith & Butler, and Smith & Bergen Streets starting at 1PM — 5 tastings for $5.00, 12 tastings for $10.00, and for families with children — 27 tastings for $20.00. Saturday from 1pm to 4pm, rain date is the next day (10/23) same times.

Harvest on Hancock
A stoop sale & bake sale spanning one of Brooklyn’s longest residential blocks is here! Get great deals on DVD players, air conditioners, appliances, books, electronics, clothing, artwork and more. Help raise funds for Hancock Street Neighborhood Association #1’s initiatives, including donations to PS 3 and great summer block parties! Date: Saturday, October 22, 2011 with a rain date of Sunday, October 23. 12 PM – 5 PM on Hancock Street between Nostrand and Bedford Avenues.

St. Marks Avenue Harvest Fest, Bulb-planting and Greening Day!
Fabulous, fun, fall-oriented art activities for kids, led by local teachers and garden members inside the St. Marks Community Garden. Grownups (and supervised kids) will keep the green theme going with volunteer tree bed care and bulb-planting for the street trees along St. Marks Avenue. We will have some tools and gloves available, but please bring ’em if you got ’em! In and in front of the St. Marks Avenue Community Garden, at 207 St. Marks Avenue between Carlton and Vanderbilt, this Saturday from 10am to 1pm. Email saintmarksblocks@gmail.com to volunteer, to reserve some bulbs for your tree pit, donate refreshments or supplies, or for more info about joining us as we form our block association!

Brooklyn Flea + Smorgasburg
On Saturday, the Flea is held at 176 Lafayette Ave. (between Clermont + Vanderbilt Avenues) in Fort Greene. On Sunday, the Flea will be at 27 North 6th Street (between Kent Avenue + East River). And on Saturday we also hold Smorgasburg, at the same Williamsburg location. Come join us – and all our food, antique, vintage and art vendors – this weekend. Flea: 10am to 5pm, Smorg: 9am to 5pm. Always free.

Stay Safe – Free Self Defense Class at the Kings Bay Y at Windsor Terrace
Kings Bay Y at Windsor Terrace presents a free self defense class by Mel Ramsay, an experienced self-defense instructor on Sunday, October 23rd from 1 pm to 3 pm.
K9WaTch, a free, volunteer service through which dog owners and their dogs will be walking women home from the subway at night, will be present to answer questions and sign up volunteers. Assemblyman Brennan and Councilman Lander are scheduled to attend to participate in a dialogue on crime prevention. Kings Bay Y at Windsor Terrace is located at 1224 Prospect Avenue and Vanderbilt Street (1 block away from F and G trains).

Walking Tour of PACC’s Impact on Clinton Hill
Starting at the Clinton Hill Library, we will walk through Clinton Hill and visit various sites that showcase PACC’s neighborhood revitalization work. Guided by PACC’s Executive Director, Deb Howard, and Nomad Architecture’s Damon Strub, the tour will examine how various people, places and programs have shaped the development of the neighborhood. The tour will conclude with a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception. Space is limited and by invitation only. Don’t miss this opportunity, reserve your spot now! Suggested donation of $15. Tree Planting at Ennis Park
We continue to work on improving Ennis park on 12th street and on October 23rd, Sunday, we will have tree planting ceremony. All volunteers are invited to come. All gardening equipment will be provided. Volunteers will also be given educational information about certain trees and plants. We greatly appreciate your support and help!

Night in Brooklyn
“Night in Brooklyn” – presented by Warby Parker and Paste Magazine – is next Friday, October 21 at Brooklyn Bowl (61 Wyth Avenue)! The event is taking place from 7:30 – 11:30 PM and will feature the bands Rich Aucoin, Hundred Visions, Kopecky Family Band and Yellow Ostrich. Also, Warby Parker’s collection of 27 limited run styles, plus one monocle, will be on display.
