On Monday, we set the scene for the renovation of a Park Slope brownstone kitchen. Today, the owner brings us up to date on how the first week went…

Week one was mostly occupied with demolition of old kitchen, with some framing started at week’s end. As the crew demolished the old kitchen, we found a few surprises: (1) our ceiling had been constructed below an original ceiling. Accordingly, the height of the room will be at least 9 inches higher than what we were used to. It’s remarkable how much 9 inches of height adds to a room. (2) We found a bricked up window on the west face of the kitchen. We will unbrick this and re-install a window, adding more light and air movement. (3) We found that the South-facing window was originally floor-to-ceiling. Unfortunately, we cannot fit restoration of this floor-to-ceiling window into our plans.
