Last night the DOT presented its plans for implementing traffic-calming measures on Classon Avenue to CB2’s Transportation Committee. The project will affect Crown Heights, Clinton Hill and Bedford Stuyvesant. The two factors DOT looked at closely were speeding and accidents, both of which are considered a significant problem on the avenue. DOT is proposing that Classon run in a single lane in low-volume traffic areas like Lafayette and Classon. In the spots where traffic is heaviest, like at Classon and Dekalb, pictured, two lanes will remain. The sections with two lanes would each have seven-foot wide parking spaces and the lanes would be 10-feet wide; the single-lane sections would be 11-feet wide with two wide parking lanes. Only 11 parking spaces would be removed, all between Atlantic and Pacific, and no bike lanes would be installed. The improvements are slated to be put in place early next year, and the avenue will be repaved at the same time.
