According to the Bureau of Economic
Analysis, spending at all levels of government has now
risen to a stunning 37% of GDP. It
was but 27% in 1960 and if things continue on the path
they are on that number will leap to 50% of GDP by 2038.
Further, the Tax Foundation notes that from 1986 through
2009… the last year for which truly hard, reputable and
irrefutable data on taxes is available… the share of
federal income taxes paid by the top 5% of the nation’s
income earners rose from 43% to 59%. This is an
astonishing number, but it is getting worse with each
The Foundation further reports that between 1986 and
2009 the percentage of Americans who paid zero income
taxes or were net recipients of income from the
government so that their net income tax was negative
rose from 18.5% to a stunning 51%.
The President’s speech last night was basically a tirade of fear mongering and distortions of the truth, bordering on hysteria. The examples are endless.
Good morning, dave.
Additionally, you know that when Soros shuts down because the regulations are too onerous that the government has gone too far. Yes, it’s a wise policy to regulate such that jobs are exported overseas and that’s just what’s going to happen with this industry.
Good morning, Slopey.
Good morning, BHI. Do you have any thoughts on my first two posts?
So, Dave, are you the go-to person to get an invitation to the next Koch Brothers shindig in Palm Springs?
In more important news, although I’m getting a bumper crop of tomatos in PA, my vines here in brooklyn have narry a bud. WTF????
It’s been a strange summer. Sunflowers and marigolds didn’t take. Azaleas all smashed up from the weight of the winter’s snow. Honeysuckle blooms were short-lived. Bleeding hearts wilted (no political jokes, please). Wisteria, crape myrtle, butterfly bush and climbing hydrangea are really thriving, much better than last year. And, the one constant, trumpet creeper is out of control but won’t bloom at all.
My thoughts? The top 1 percent, oh hell, the top 5 percent will come out of this just fine. Why should I worry? The voting masses have no interest in facts or their own welfare, so let’s just keep manufacturing outrage. China can manufacture everything else.
Whould you really be satisfied buying yur next wardrobe from H&M, manufactured in China???
I guess there will ALWAYS be LL Bean.
I am not a fan of disposable clothing. I was raised to buy things that last. LL Bean is an essential component of WASP orthodoxy.
Yesterday, omar_little was back, making a pseudo-racist post. Today the post has been deleted. I wonder how long until he gets banned (assuming it has not already happened)
My trumpet creeper is the same. I’m going to have >100 figs but hardly any apples
Oh, and a bumper crop of white grapes at chateau slopey.
I would suspect if the post has actually been deleted that he’s been banned.
BHI, these regulations that force the likes of Soros to close cannot be good for your employer as well.
Well, call me crazy, but I worry more for the millions of Americans who do not have any savings, assets, healthcare or job prospects. As E.M. Forster wrote:”When rich people fail at one profession they can try another.”
I spend 40 hours per week with the very people who trash any attempt at economic oversight as immoral, but view escorts as an earned entitlement.
Yes, Saraghina seems to have a bumper crop of grapes too
My garden is too dark to grow much of anything. I have herbs and flowers on the roof which may or may not be alive when I get back from vacation.
You could have given us the keys and we’d be happy to water them for you.
I have a housekeeper, but she is afraid of heights and will not water anything close to the edges of the roof deck. Maybe the rain will keep them going until I get home.
It did rain here last night, BHI.
Is she legal?
Interesting test of BHI’s essential wasp-ness. We’ll see how he answers.
Of course she is legal. She was born and raised in Flatbush.
Indeed, the government needs to focus on programs that kick start the economy and, in particular, job creation. There should be no higher priority than that right now.
If only a program like the WPA was possible in this economic environment. Alas, that will never happen. It never ceases to shock me that so many people buy the argument that more tax breaks and less regulation will create more jobs. For example: The FAA stops collecting taxes and airlines jack up ticket prices.
And what would those be, Dave? Not trying to be snarky, either. You are always complaining about gov’ment jobs, but aside from the gov’t paying the private sector to make jobs, which makes no sense, there is nothing they can do to “make” anyone create a job. Like BHI said, the FAA can’t collect taxes at the moment (another moment in stupidland) so instead of creating jobs, or even giving the passengers a price break, the airlines raise prices. In a corporate mindset where layoffs mean a fatter bottom line and return for stockholders, there is no incentive for creating jobs. What is the government supposed to do that it hasn’t done, or is legally able to do?
Right. Though it is true that the only job a politician can create is a government job, employed people have money to spend. That spending creates demand and more private sector jobs are created. Recent history proves that giving corporations more leads them to bank the savings rather than investing in new employees.
exactly. And exactly the reason the cut taxes and jobs will come theory has been such a bust.
GM, Just stopping in. Actually working from home today! How great is that!
how was the commute? did you have to hurdle any cats, slippers, etc in the hallway on route to the work station (aka laptop)?
Commute couldn’t be better, thank you for asking! Did end up starting, earlier than I had planned, at 8:15am. Cat is ensconced on the bed. No fuzzy slippers, barefoot! Only issue: I forgot to eat breakfast first. Must attend to this now!
Rush Limbaugh yesterday:”Americans don’t believe in shared sacrifice.”
Personally, I don’t think most poor people want class warfare. They just want jobs. A job gives a person self-respect and a greater sense of their connection to humanity.
“The welfare of the people in particular has always been the alibi of tyrants, and it provides the further advantage of giving the servants of tyranny a good conscience.”
Newt Gingrich loves to quote Camus.
Somehow, BHI, I don’t think legion will take that as the discrediting remark you intended it to be.
Leave it to a French Existentialist to accurately summarize the benefits of Capitalism amid emerging Socialistic sentimentality.
Well, that’s your interrpetation of Camus. Here is another:
“Camus thus envisioned a society in which liberty and justice are treated as complimentary, not opposites. Liberty as the continual capacity to live out our hope and realize our possibilities; and justice as the equitable distribution of the resources and opportunities that make effective liberty possible. There is no absolute utopia, or messianic vision that will save us. Rather there are “relative utopias” that eschew didactic attachment to any precise specification of the ideal society, but commit themselves to an open-ended process of human persons exercising their freedom in dialogic collaboration. This democratic vision is not of a specific form of government, but of a process of collective self-definition and development rooted in maximum worker and community self-management. It is a metaphysical ideal that addresses the ontological demand for dignity that gave birth to rebellion.”
I think you would agree that time has shown our economic system to be the most effective way of achieving an equitable distribution of resources and opportunities that make effective liberty possible.
When the majority of soldiers and veterans who fight in the military are rich and well taken care of for the rest of their lives, then you can claim that our system of government has an “equitable distribution”. When an organization has to raise funds to bury a group of soldiers who are homeless, i hardly call our society effective.
As usual, you choose to take a social/mental health issue and use it as a political wedge.
Then I would say that as usual, you do not see the implications of what you say. You like headlines, I like the complete story. So typical of you.
how many jobs did we lose with Soros’ fd closing? I know they were mega god almighty paying jobs but just curious how many jobs were lost via the closing
There is Americorps, which was started under Clinton and expanded under Bush.
It seems to get good reviews and have widespread support from those who know about it.
I think Obama missed a big opportunity by not expanding it as part of the stimulus package.
The stimulus was handled in an incredibly poor manner. Obama has missed many opportunities.
This is the point I’ve been ranting about for a few years now.
anyone else piling on to short NetFlix??
I am still unsure about what to do about Netflix. I hate the new pricing structure, but the alternatives are not as attractive as I would wish.
I’m considering getting back into Netflix, looking for a short term bounce.
Long term (3-5 years), I think Amazon will be the winner in that market.
not just competition, their content cost is exploding eating a ton into their earnings
That’s an awfully crowded trade today, m4l.
DIBS, given the share price, the massive big dog competition forthcoming, there’s tons of room for this baby to go down
I’ve said for well over 2 years that they should have suspended payroll taxes. Many economists had said the same thing. The stimulus plan was ill conceived, porrly implemented and has been a failure.
It’s not my job to think for the administration. They had the opportunity and they failed.
If you really don’t think that suspending the payroll taxes would have been an economic boost to the economy then we have nothing to talk about.
It’s time for them to re-focus. If you can’t accept that then the people you voyed in are failing.
You know things are bad when intelligent people have made such idiotic mistakes that their rivals who view prayer as a solution begin to appeal to vast numbers of voters.
Dave, whenever we argue about politics here, you are always complaining, (wrongly) that our side doesn’t back up its arguments with facts. I see when it works for you, as in “it’s not my job to think for the administration”, it’s supposed to be a valid point. NOT.
Suspending the payroll taxes for a period of time would put some money into the economy. But it’s robbing Peter to pay Paul. The working poor and middle class get a few bucks, but as usual, the big savings go to the people making the big money. 6% of $30K is a lot smaller than 6% of 300K. Higher income people will put their money into the bank, or the stock market, not the mall. Businesses will put their money in the bank, as well, not into jobs. A host of economists have rejected the idea, for a host of good reasons.
And the payroll tax doesn’t do diddly for someone without a job.
The administration has begged, cajoled and literally given banks money to jumpstart the economy. TARP was supposed to prop up banks so that they would start lending, especially to small businesses, the largest employers in the country, overall. What did they do? Bank it, and continue as usual, showing huge profits. They still are not lending, so small businesses can’t start or grow. They helped to create the mortgage crisis, and they won’t cooperate with housing relief.
The stimulus had a lot of missteps and lost opportunities, but it also had a lot of successes, and under the circumstances, saved us from total ruin. It also had to be done in a hurry, and with 20/20 hindsight, could have been better. But we would be much worse off as a country, and the world, without it.
I still don’t see any answer to my question. If what the admin. did was so useless, what has the other side got that’s better?
A friend of mine on Netflix:
“I think Netflix has been planning this move for several years, but were just waiting for the right moment…when telco companies announced their new restrictions on bandwidth and when people were really hooked on streaming movies…to drop the bomb. It’ll earn major money.”
I’ve read that the Netflix hike is because licensing agreements with several movie companies run out this year.
they expecting massive increases in them renewal agreements. hence the near term exposure for them is not on rev but more so on earnings as content cost explode. I also them they might’ve modeled too low of an attrition rate for those hybrid customers who got the $6 rate increase
The pendulum has swung too far on regulation. From health care to the EPA, and now the SEC, regulation and the iuncertain costs surrounding it are choking business.
Time for it to stop.
You may just get your wish, Dave. Let the Tea Party have their way. Then America’s motto should be: “Hold my beer. Watch this.”
Oh cripes. Camus. Bunch of egg heads I hang out with!
Lowering taxes certainly helps the economy in the short term, but I feel it is very irresponsible given the already high levels of deficit spending.
I don’t think Camus had a vision of liberty and justice that includes the creation of a “Super Congress” or enhanced pat-downs of 5-year old children.
I wouldn’t pretend to know what Camus means or what he would think about the major questions facing our government today. I just think it is easy to pull quotes out of context and put them in your own to make them sound like you want them to mean, and then claim the philosopher as one of your own. A lot of that going around.
Yeah, like when people use the bible to justify bigotry.
I think it’s safe to say that Camus would have supported a political/economic structure which sought to advance the human condition based on his inherent potential, not on his basic fears.
That is soooooo French. A bunch of words. Theory with no plan.
Assuming that is an accurate characterization of what Camyus would have supported,as formulated it is equally subject to being claimed by the liberal and conservative ends of the US political spectrum. You and I would disagree only as to which side would be right in so claiming. But I believe the honest answer is that Camus’s thought is not amenable to being pinned down to the rhetorical needs of any particular US political faction.
Nonsense, what good are the French philosophers for
if not to bash your political opposition into submission.
Oh no, not Camus again!! I’ll deregulate anything you want. Just stop quoting Camus!!! [Kind of like the knights who say “ni.”]
I’m just now, searching for my hard cover copy of
The Myth of Sisyphus,
the better to pound you with!
On the walk from the train station there was a homeless person’s sign, “homeless, please help,” and change cup, but the homeless person wasn’t in sight. I thought to myself, “my friend your problem isn’t that you’re homeless, it’s that you’re invisible, you should change your sign to ‘invisible: need money for full body make-up, wig, and sunglasses'”
Lech, that was the dude’s satellite location – 1 of a few of his recent expanded locations (part of his rev growth plan)
Did you talk to him about it?
Good one slopey, good one.
hence my cry “Bring forth the better replacement” to run the country. I’m not liking the choices so far. Anyone else want in for 2012????
You mean, you don’t think Rick Perry will ride into the race and save us all. Perry/Palin 2012.
if the dude hasn’t announced officially, he doesn’t count.
What a metaphor, lech! You could write a book on the invisible poor!
ha! Hadn’t thought of that.
“Medicare, with all its flaws, works better than private insurance. It has less bureaucracy and, hence, lower administrative costs than private insurers. It has been more successful in controlling costs. While Medicare expenses per beneficiary have soared over the past 40 years, they’ve risen significantly less than private insurance premiums.”
“Lowering taxes certainly helps the economy in the short term, but I feel it is very irresponsible given the already high levels of deficit spending. ”
ROTFLMMFAO….when the private sector runs into this, they cut spending.
Wake up and smell the coffee, Democrats!!!!!
I am barely surviving under these oppressive Bush tax rates. Oh, please…
And I am waiting for either party to get serious about cutting spending.
In the current political climate, any social security and medicare cuts will take years or decades to make a difference, and no one seems to want to cut military spending.
Now that the stimulus is winding down, there is nothing else to cut that will make a material difference.
Until there is a plan in place to reduce spending somewhere, how could you argue that additional tax cuts are the responsible thing to do?
I can’t find my file to insert here on “Medicare is so far superior to the $1200 per month private coverage I had.”
Rule No. 1 in shorting: Never short a good company
If you have a firm grasp of the fundamentals, then go ahead. I suspect none of you do.
I’ve made way more money off shorting than going long so I can comfortably say I aint no newbie. but given shorts can take a while to materialize, I short the stk vs buying puts
“Invisible: Please Help”
I think that’s a clever sign for a homeless person.
Medicare is fine as long as taxpayers can continue to fund it. Just because you don’t pay out of pocket doesn’t mean someone else doesn’t
That said, it’ll be here for me and I’ll happily take it.
Jackal, did you check the local Starbucks? I bet he went in there.
I got a window seat on the river side this morning.
The improvement in my daily commute is no longer new to me. Every morning my commute is better than it was when I was in Brooklyn, but I now expect it as routine. After a while a rich man stops thinking about how rich he is all the time.
Doctors enrolled in medicare are still facing a 23% paycut under the current healthcare reform initiative.
Let’s see how effective Medicare is when thousands of doctors start leaving the program for poor pay.
Or the Koran to justify annihilating infidels.
Yes, the list could go on.
All of this jibber jabber about the economy is like listening to 4 year olds speculate as to why mommy and daddy are making those noises behind the locked door. The truth is pretty obvious, you just can’t see it, and even if you did you wouldn’t really understand it.
Please, enlighten us oh wisest of men.
You’re not the one who needs enlightenment for the most part.
Most Americans are screwed. It just isn’t socially acceptable to state that fact, so “jibber jabber” goes on. Like the 4-year old, people know what is happening behind the locked door. A lot of screwing.
So true. But the condescending, pedantic tone of the president last night was truly deplorable. As I said earlier, it was a tirade of fear mongering and distortions of the truth, bordering on hysteria
The Republicans never engage in fear mongering? When the Republicans get to go on t.v. right after the president and call him a liar and generally bash him, I wouldn’t worry that the democrats have any sort of tactical advantage. We have a 2-party system that doesn’t work, especially when a minority of total wing-nuts takes advantage of that fact and controls the dialogue. They don’t want the government to work and are winning.
yes, another kindred spirit who calls it as we see it – both parties suck BIG TIME and too busy finger pointing vs looking at mirror to see their warts
I prefer his version to “Mission Accomplished”, no matter what the issue. Even “four year olds” can tell the difference between a honest answer and fluffy lies. We’re in deep poop. I’d rather be told that, than be told “don’t worry, your life will not change.”
Or freedom of speech to justify hate speech.
Actually, hate speech is protected under freedom of speech.
Yes I know- which is why some people use it so freely.
jackal, so given your reluctance to answer my question that I asked a few times, let me rephrase it.
Will you be able to do RMLC at the new gig???
I will have less flexibility to do RMLC but will be able to make it happen sometimes. Other locations would be better.
I suspect Oscar Wilde has more concrete ideas about economies, people and governments.
A political candidate who could encapsulate the wit of Oscar Wilde would eradicate any opponents. I don’t see one coming along, however.
i don’t know what’s more boring, doing work or listening to dave rehash the same political talking points every day.
you get paid doing your work; you get punished listening to DIBS
The French are long on theory but short on logistics.
Thanks for reminding us that jackal once had a french nom de querre.
dh, please, feel free to contribute today.
Perhaps you can review a recent cocktail that you’ve discovered. Anything but the constant whining.
Learn to be part of the solution, not partt of the problem
1. Do you believe you are entitled to medical care (entitled meaning the government has to provide it for you)?
2. If so, how much? Would you settle for the best medical care that would have been available to your grandparents or do you insist on the best that is available today?
3. Do you know how much that costs? Do you know how much more it costs to give you the best of today’s medical care as compared to the kind of care your grandparents would have received?
4. Who do you expect to pay for it?
5. Are you doing everything you can to maintain your own health? Do you smoke? Do you drink excessively? Do you engage in risky sexual or other behavior? Are you particularly overweight? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, do you think it is fair to shift the cost of your medical care to others?
6. You can be kept alive, at great expense, under a lot of circumstances in which your grandparents would have died. Are you asking to be kept alive in those circumstances or are you willing to accept an end of life more or less when your grandparents would have?
Can we start coming up with lists of questions to justify endless wars instead of lists of questions to justify providing Americans with healthcare?
These are very difficult and very valid questions.
The type which we should all be asking ourselves as a nation these days.
Those are very interesting questions, Lech.
Some things that complicate the debate on medical care:
1. Advances in medicine mean:
– we can treat many more conditions than we used to.
– we can keep people alive much longer than we used to.
– but this is much, much more expensive than medical care ever was a generation or two ago (the technology and equipment alone can be staggeringly expensive).
2. Once an advance is made, people demand it. You try telling a dying person that it’s possible to save his life but the government won’t pay for it.
3. But giving everyone the best medical care is literally impossible.
4. So how do you give people less than the best? That means there comes a time when you have to tell people “sorry, we could save you, but we’re not going to. You’re going to have to die now.”
If all people wanted was access to the kind of care our grandparents had, that would actually be quite easy.
We are doomed by our own success in medicine.
No, I don’t think we are doomed at all. I think we’re a little dumb, and can be smarter. We can educate much more, and we can provide more access to preventative medicine, so that the more costly services are not needed as often.
I think we could provide/set up the services to care for more people in their homes more easily, by family, where most people want to be when ill/dying. Rather than making this VERY difficult, as we do now.
And I think most people are actually pretty reasonable in their expectations as to what care they need/want at the end of their lives. At least in my experience.
But I do think everyone should at least give some thought to the questions you presented.
The triage questions you’re talking about are more hypothetical than real. And lead people to think about death panels when they really ought to be considering real things like home hospice, etc. over nursing homes.
True, cobble. And well said. My experience has been the same. i sometimes think we show more compassion and understanding of our pets at end of life, than we do about people.
Agree. The elderly are treated like crap in this country.
They should have been nicer to their children when they were raising them
Anyone over 40 is considered to be a waste in our youth worshipping country.
I’m not sure I would go that far, maybe after 65?
I’ll meet you halfway- over 55
Make it 60, and you have a deal!
That’s very true, but the cat is out of the bag. It’s like wishing we’d go back to wood burning stoves so houses wouldn’t blow up because of gas explosions. Or wishing there were no computers so that nutball racists couldn’t log onto hate spewing websites and find out how to build bombs. We need to accept that advances in medicine come with these conundrums, and figure out how to deal with them. It’s not going to be easy.
“i hardly call our society effective. ”
What country or society would you call effective?
Truthfully, none of them. But that’s different than saying they don’t function.
What really has France contributed to the global economy besides Citroens and vineyard stock???
BHI, the only bad war was Iraq. Afghanistan and now Libya are justified. That said, it would seem the the US military has never learned that it will never again win a land based war.
We have weapons of mass destruction.
Use them and get it done with.
What the hell is going to happen once Iran blows up????
I served two tours in Afghanistan right after college. There is a reason that it has been labeled the graveyard of empires. You cannot win a war in Afghanistan. Americans, like other nations that failed there, cannot approach the Taliban or any other culture we are fighting with a Western mindset. They do not, will not and never will think about issues as we think. All wars are bad. It has become an industry. You see using nuclear weapons as the only path to success? How is that success?
What service???? Enlisted or officer?? MOS?
Marine 2nd Lt. Ground intelligence.
Well… ten-hut, officer on deck. I was an enlisted squid.
Did you see any war zone action during your time?
impressive. am liking you more by the day (nh)
Thank you for your service brooklynheightsivy.
US Media and Gov always brings up Iran, how come the intl nuclear regulating body during their visits never find nuclear weapon production and certifies it’s rather electric production??? Am starting to believe this is yet another American angle to get into their for “other” reasons
Oh great, now we’re nuking other countries in DaveWorld.
Yes- it’s not the first time he’s had this brilliant idea. He thinks nuking someone across the ocean means we’ll be safe.
I like to read Proust in particular, to the many hustlers that I bring home. They go away enlightened
President Obama is just mad because the new congress has taken away his credit card.
What we are experiencing now is the credit counseling stage of negotiation.
Would have been better if they had sent Bush to counseling, but then again, congress was shoving money at Bush.
lech – The same group that won’t let me have euthanasia nor abortion are the ones who decry reason in health care.
There are other options of annihilation before nukes.
bxgrl, you used two extreme points of view. Neither should military be made “rich” by society and nor should they have to be buried by someone else.
Be more realistic in your argument
By rich I meant soldiers should not die homeless- a many who have come back from Iraq and Afghanistan have. And when a non profit has to raise funds to bury those vets who have lost everything because they did multiple tours in Iraq or Afghanistan, then our society is not effective. I did not say the military should be made rich. Very different thing.
Why should a soldier not die homeless? If they come back and fu ck everything up and do a bunch of drugs and waste their money…. well then they end up homeless.
Once you’re in the service it’s ridiculously easy to stay in until retirement and get a pension. If you go in at 18 you can be retired with full military pension by 38 and have a whole second career ahead of you.
I see no reason homeless vets should be special (assuming the homelessness isn’t a direct result of their service, like if they have PTSD for example, but there is actually plenty of help for that).
Because many of the returning vets today have lost homes and jobs due to multiple deployments- this is the group i am talking about. Other than that, your lack of compassion for vets is appalling.
Vets are way too fetishized. It’s flag waving.
Try a trip to Walter Reed. Or Fisher House.
I know what’s there. Doesn’t change what I’m saying. I think vets are way too fetishized. It’s flag waving.
I’m no flag waver, but I do know who to thank for service to their country. If you think that’s fetishizing, that’s your problem, not mine.
Troop Pullouts Become Easy Savings in Debt-Reduction ’Smoke’
July 26 (Bloomberg) — More than a third of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s new $2.7 trillion debt reduction plan comes from $1 trillion in “savings” that are happening anyway — the reduction of U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Moron of the Day Award
The Republican plan also counted on those savings, dave.
I am going to go cycle around the island with my grandparents. Have a great day, everyone.
can i join the republican side for a bit?
It depends. We have our fair share of nutjobs already.
Bentley is going to introduce an SUV.
Cut, Cap, Balance
Oh, that’s helpful.
I find it unbelievable that a large portion of vets have been in that case. it must have taken some truly ignorant decisions on their part.
What are the numbers?
I’m in agreement with lechacal on this.
I said “many.” Stories have been in the news for the last 9 years. I did not say “large portion.”
Spending tax money on more government jobs is like drinking
sea water while stranded out on a boat.
It feels good at first,
then the salt begins to take its toll by sucking the needed water out of the body and creating more thirst.
…best bet is to push the sea water in through your rectum,
but I’m not sure how to posit that in political terms.
Notice I said that there were plenty of options before using an actual nuke.
“BHI, the only bad war was Iraq. Afghanistan and now Libya are justified. That said, it would seem the the US military has never learned that it will never again win a land based war.
We have weapons of mass destruction.
Use them and get it done with.
What the hell is going to happen once Iran blows up???? ”
Did you use invisible ink, because I don’t see any options presented. “Weapons of mass destruction” generally means nukes or chemical warfare, or conventional bombs so big they may as well be nukes. None of those are are acceptable for the United States in an undeclared war. That’s absolutely abhorrent.
Define “many” in relation to all miltary
1000 is many. in the grand scheme of things, it is not.
I didn’t put it in proportion to the entire military. You did. Go with it dave. You can argue this one with yourself.
No M4L I did not serve in combat. I might have gotten a paper cut or two and I got in a couple of fights but that’s pretty much it.
“Try a trip to Walter Reed. Or Fisher House.”
Poster childs of inefficient, inept government beauracracies.
You might ask the patients there. Not that you care.
Dave, give up. You sound like a heartless, uncaring jerk.
Are we at the point where the lives of people who serve this country are only valuable when the numbers exceed a certain amount? I’m sure that would come as a great comfort to the families of people who’ve been blown to smithereens on a road in Afghanistan, or to the soldier with no legs laying in a bed at Walter Reed. The fact that those institutions are not what they should be is disgraceful, and is on the military and the powers that be. Soldiers and their families didn’t have much choice as to where their broken bodies were sent.
To dismiss them because the institutions that are supposed to be caring for them are “inefficient and inept” is really a new low.
“I didn’t put it in proportion to the entire military. You did. Go with it dave. You can argue this one with yourself.”
Of course you did. Typical cop out when the facts need to be discussed.
No- just bored with your usual m.o. for discussions.
You also stated that our society was ineffective. I’d say that pretty much would depend upon massively hufge numbers.
But, no, you’re not going to lower yourself to the actual factualnumbers
Yawn….. no I’ll just watch you start foaming at the mouth as you try to whip up a fight.
When push comes to shove and you’re asked to back up your pronouncements with facts, it’s the same old, same old
bxgrl wanted to score political points by pointing to a social/mental health issue.
This would be similar to stating that our entire healthcare system is inept because people sometimes have bad outcomes.
Yet you constantly try to score political points with your pseudo-philosophical musings that you constantly inflict on us.
You don’t agree with the sea water colon cleanse as a means of survival when stranded at sea?
I’m more concerned with being eaten by sharks. A salt water cleanse would be a luxury at that point
so how does that work? just stick bare bottom into sea water and then let osmosis (or whatever is the spelling) do it’s magic to absorb the sea water?
I hardly think the plight of soldiers is a “social/mental health issue”. They would not be lying there shot up or maimed if we were not at war. They were not there working for Blackwater Security, they were there as American soldiers. I’m no flag waver either, but in my book, they answered the call to service for the country, the least we can do is make sure they get the best of care if they need it. Yeah, they volunteered for a dangerous job, but since we don’t pay enough for mercenaries to do our heavy fighting for us, we have to use citizen-soldiers. You get involved in a war, for reasons good or ill, then you gotta take care of those doing the work. It’s not complicated.
By “social/menntal health issue”
I mean that the problems are not because of a lack of dedicated resources for the most part. The problems are there because the support system which has been set up has missed its mark in those cases.
In other words, I wouldn’t deny the problem of homelessness amongst vets, to a certain degree,
only the implication that resources are absent.
I didn’t say the resources were non-existent. We were talking about the equitable distribution on said resources.
I’ve noticed facts, unless they are facts that agree with your philosophy, are overlooked or denied. So why should I waste my time. You’re free to google.
“”Weapons of mass destruction” generally means nukes or chemical warfare, or conventional bombs so big they may as well be nukes.”
EXACTLY…they don’t have to be nukes. Do you get the point now??
Agent orange is a weapon of mass destruction, perfectly acceptable.
You namby pamby liberals are going to be hoping we have a nuke and use it when things get out of hand with Iran.
they’ll attack israel first and I can’t wait to hear all the weeping and gnashing of teeth over that
I think nerve gas and toxic agents that burn out your lungs, eyes and soft tissue, or cause one to dissolve inside, coming down with some horrific hemorrhagic fever and suffering for days before dying, is worse than a nuke. If you think sending that to rain down on people is in any way acceptable or justified, then you have a disconnect that no manner of argument is going to cure.
I see no reason to continue this fruitless discussion. Do you get THAT point now?
What is it bxgrl??? You behave like a child when someone calls you out on your facts.
escalating. next comes the demands, then the foaming at the mouth. You need to change your technique dave.
DIBS, your views on warfare are some of the worst ideas I have ever seen on the OT. “Annihilation” (of what? of whom?) requires more or less an early 19th century view of sovereignty and the international system.
I know legion. it’s just a sign of immaturity when people don’t take ownership of their opinions when asked to back them up with facts.
Here dave. Take your teddy bear and go have a nap.
Speaking of Israel…..
…has anyone seen the short film “West Bank Story”? It’s a musical spoof of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is roughly based on the film “West Side Story”, but with more comedy thrown in. As unbelievable as that may sound, the film is very funny and basically takes no sides.
that sounds like the Adam Sandler movie,
Don’t Mess With The Zohan.
Well, jackal. What do you think is going to be an appropriate response if iran launches a nuke????
and why would Iran launch nukes?
You were proposing “annihilation” in Afghanistan. What or whom do you propose to “annihilate”, how do you intend to accomplish that, and how would that serve to advance US foreign policy interests?
And oil goes to $350????
I’m serious about the sea water through the colon route.
If anyone here is ever caught out on a boat,
don’t drink the seawater, the colon is more efficient at extracting water molecules separated from salt and minerals.
“and why would Iran launch nukes? ”
because they have them and the country is in the handss of a nutjob, including the higher up Khameni
and you place a highly probable odds of them firing the nukes over odds they won’t?? anything is possible but is it probable
what are we going to do about these blonde haired, blue eyed norwegian islamic extremists?
MM and bxgrl…I’m done with you on this issue.
Your views of what I said are distorted and extreme. bxgrl, when asked for a few numbers reverts to child-like behavior.
Have a nice day
Enjoy the rest of your day.
Afghanistan should have been carpet bombed after 9-11 and then we should have walked away. It would have been appropriate and politically acceptable globally.
Yes because killing off millions of innocent civilians to get the bad ones is such a great , humane option. Mm is right.
It doesn’t matter how politically acceptable it would have been. It would have accomplished no objective. That’s sort of like setting fire to your car when the timing belt breaks. Doesn’t matter if you can get away with it, after you do it you just have a burned out car. Don’t get emotional about these things. If you have to kill a bunch of people to accomplish a military objective, well that’s fine. But don’t kill just because you’re angry if it won’t accomplish an objective.
Legion, my friend.
Another short film I saw recently was entitled “Nueva York”. You should see it. It follows a group of Hispanics of different origins and degrees of Americanization. The story of a Mexican laborer is particularly moving, and the final scene of his coming home to his Columbian wife brought a tear to many in the audience.
Wait…. legion are you seriously telling us that you can re-hydrate with ocean water if you introduce it up the bum?
But only for a short period.
Yes- but our intestines will fall out.
Given our forays into Afghanistan, the rest of them (Iran, Hezbollah, etc) now view us as an inferior threat, without the will to act
Their government put them at risk harboring the taliban.
Funny- Al Qaeda had the same idea when they attacked us on 9-11. Did you get that from their user manual?
wasn’t the gov itself taliban?
I can’t wait to hear the weeping and outrage by bxgrl when iran attacks Israel.
If Iran attacks Israel, I worry for Iran. I have every confidence Israel can take care of itself.
I’m still looking for that Italian film you recommended months ago,
the one without dialogue.
Or the attempts at justification if Israel attacks iran first, which may be more likely
Anyone who lives in NYC and takes the subway to work everyday and works in a central business district shouldn’t be so gun happy about dealing with “terrorist” countries.
We may win the war – but don’t think they won’t get their potshots in, probably in the form of attacking NYC
They already did- in 1993 and 2001.
i have never understood the rationale behind declaring war on a whole country when the “enemy” isn’t centralized in one location.
and why our targets are always the wussiest countries out of all the bad boys over there. we go after afghanistan and iraq but don’t mess with saudi arabia, iran, pakistan. lame.
it’s like we’re in high school, getting picked on by the jocks, and go beat up a freshman nerd because we’re p i s s e d off.
I completely agree. But it seems some of us here still think in high school terms.
I can think of a few ways to get seawater into someone’s bum. Wouldn’t something else full of protein be even better?
if the gov’t required mandatory military service of all citizens, you’d see a lot more people caring about these useless wars.
yes, in an emergency situation lost at sea,
the safest route to take in water is through the back.
Using some sort of improvised funnel.
I don’t know where I stand on military service. i think a volunteer army, as long as it is working, is probably the best option.
But yes, if it were mandatory, things would be different. I’m sure it will never be mandatory. Istituting the draft has proven to be a very unpopular decision in the past but it also depends upon the social mood at the time.
” in an emergency situation lost at sea,
the safest route to take in water is through the back.
Using some sort of improvised funnel. ”
An empty gin bottle?
that would work.
But what if it still had gin in it. Would you pour out the gin immediately? Or savor it until the last drop and then use the gin bottle?
Alcohol is a diuretic.
Blocks ADH and causes one to lose water.
Better to dump the gin and use the glass bottle to condense fresh water.
Or use the empty bottle for a colon cleanse.
…of course, if one is rescued shortly after, there is still the need to explain why there is a bottle up there.
HA! Drink that Dave!
thank you legion.
“Anyone who lives in NYC and takes the subway to work everyday and works in a central business district shouldn’t be so gun happy about dealing with “terrorist” countries.”
Man, am I glad I work from home now. In Crown Heights, where it’s safe.
“We are doomed by our own success in medicine.”
“and why our targets are always the wussiest countries out of all the bad boys over there. we go after afghanistan and iraq but don’t mess with saudi arabia, iran, pakistan. lame”
that statement shows an incredible lack of understanding of the issues, both political and economic
if you’re going to wage wars against countries that harbor terrorists, why not go after the big boys?
and yes, i understand the rammifications of doing that, which just shows how retarded the whole idea is.
if you harbor terrorists, we will go after you, unless you have nukes or oil or own a large percentage of our country.
Especially since something like 17 of the terrorists on 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia.
Great article about this in Vanity Fair this month. Poll said most Americans believe that the 9/11 terrorists were Iraqi. BAH!
Let them stand in the idiot corner with the conspiracy theorists.
Iraq was a wuss country? It had the 4th largest standing army in the world at the time.
But badly trained and supplied. Seems Hussein felt he had the numbers and they were expendable.
“Would you pour out the gin immediately? ”
Stupidest thing you’ve ever said.
MORON is the only response to that.
We’re talking a survival situation here. There may not be a choice.
In the case of Afghanistan, the government of the country was harboring and actively supporting known enemies of the United States in several regions of the country.
I am more or less supportive of the decisions Bush made there in the first 6-12 months following 9/11/01.
We severely impacted the ability of an enemy to carry out war against us and we captured a large number of key planners of the attacks.
More importantly, we sent a clear message to any other country that supported or enabled attacks against the U.S.
We should have completely pulled out after that and left the country to whatever group filled the vacuum.
Thing would have been ugly and screwed up there, but not materially worse than before we went in.
I agree. Would only add that in addition to completely pulling out of Afghanistan, we never should have set foot in Iraq.
I was against the Iraq war from the start.
Between our bases in Iraq and Kuwait, we had the ability to contain Iraq and take the offensive any time the potential threat became real.
Agree as well.
BHS, unlike most times, I’m totally in agreement with what you said.
Why are you people wasting precious gin?!! : P
Combine a steady decline in the health of the population with a steady increase in our ability to make people better and the reason we can’t provide free medical care to all should be immediately apparent. One or both of the following things needs to happen for this to be possible:
1. Improve population health
2. Accept lower level of care (effectively creating a two class system where money buys modern care outside of the government network).
Unless one, and probably both, of these things happens, government run health care seems impossible.
Of the 4 people I am/have been close to in their final years. ALL did not want extraordinary measures taken. ALL wanted to be cared for and to die at home. One refused intense chemo/radiation, in favor of enjoying final (shortened) days and wanted to just be at home surrounded by family/friends, and did.
Of course if rescue is imminent,
do not dump the gin,
take a few swigs and start a chorus of row row row your boat.
But usually , with the marine psychic dead, it’s difficult to know if rescue is imminent. However problem solved if you have 2 bottles of gin.
That’s it!! Never leave the house without TWO bottles of gin!! : P
Stay off of third world ferry boats and you’re unlikely to run into the problem.
unfortunately, in this politically charged climate,
any frank discussion along the lines of the questions you raised
immediately begins the process of finger pointing.
Each side using the mention of these ideas as fodder against the other.
So was bin laden.
They were all trained in and supported by Afghanistan
Notes of autopsy:
“Subject, dressed in sailor costume, appears to have large volume of a mixture of seawater and gin in rectum. Note from “bluesmurfhoodlum” found in pocket with recommendation for colonic clinic.”
“The elderly are treated like crap in this country. ”
Where are they treated better? Please supply some statistics supporting this assertion.
Oh please. I’m not looking for an argument, I’m just stating how I feel about how the elderly are treated.
“They were all trained in and supported by Afghanistan”
What an incredibly unsophisticated understanding of international affairs. There is no “Afghanistan”. It’s so much more complicated than that. There is no one to bomb back to the stone age.
Encouraging people to improve their diets and excercise programs would probably do far more good than Obamacare at a small fraction of the cost.
Ohmygod that’s it! Brilliant! Why don’t you get right on that.
DCB, you doing a drive-by again as last time or you’re going to hang out a bit this time?
wasn’t michelle obama doing something like that with young kids and the republicans got pissy and said she should mind her own business?
yeah drudge report started posting a calorie count of every meal she was eating, which was a serious dick move and really turned me off of drudge
yeah – pretty lame. only in this political climate is something like nutrition education by the first lady an issue.
No, the First Lady’s healthy food initiative was scrapped
after a photo emerged of Joe Biden doing a Cool Whip aerosol bottle chug at one of the press conferences.
benson, by now both you and I should have learned that to ask these people for statistics supporting thier statements is like talking to a child.
DCB in the house!
looks like DCB pulling a drive-by again. one post and gone
There are people to bamb back into the stone age. Coincidentally, their religious and societal views are still there.
The “cola” tax would be a good start.
Plus, I’m all for taxing things that I myself don’t consume.
Anyone wanna bet that Cobble is furiously googling right now to support her pronouncement ?
Jackass. No, I’m working.
er…cobble- you’re posting on the OT, fer goodness sakes 😉
Ok, better phrased…trying to work, but easily distracted!
so who said youth is wasted on the young?
this guys is some s c u m bag douche:
You aren’t kidding. How does he even justify this?
and then to pawn it off to the surviving kid’s estate as for the reason to suit – ie how low can he get?????
I hope he loses every cent he has. What an s.o.b. suing the brother-in-law who lost his 3 daughters because his drunk wife was driving his borrowed car. Like the car was at fault? People like that are monsters. Most likely he’ll get thrown out of court and become a real pariah.
another scum bag
there really is a nice breeze sitting in backyard today. I don’t even mind being back in city today.
I have the a/c off and windows open for first time in days! : )
OMG….Just saw this in the Post at the shoe shine….
Welcome the “Russian Dolls,” Lifetime’s upcoming reality show featuring tawdry, money-grubbing Russians living and spending big in Brighton Beach.
that show is going to be awesome
Do try and keep up, dave. It was in Monday Links.
To address some of Lech’s points below.
In most private industries, technology is used to lower costs and/or improve service. The average laptop of today has more computing power than the mainframes used during the Apollo space missions, and at a price that is affordable to the majority of people.
In medicine, however, we have the opposite situation: the escalating price of health care is often blamed on the high cost of the latest technology.
This situation is the result of overbearing and improper government regulations that do not provide the correct incentives. Obamacare will only compound this situation.
I think should be nice for next 36 hours. enjoy it. new neighbor is doing renovation so not quiet like country though.
I can’t wait. it’ll be the first of any of them that i’ll watch…just to learn more about Brooklyn!!!
I guess I should be glad that “reality” TV shows are moving on to other ethnicities.
so you get your version of reality through watching television?
how about a reality show about people watching reality shows?
How about a reality show of a retired “pensioner” who is no longer useful to society
..leading a life of dissipation in Bucks County? : P
No longer implies that Pete was ever useful to society.
I think if you asked our clients that you’d get a different story!!!!
have to agree with DIBS’ firm’s returns. only if I had enough money to clear his hurdle mark
how about a race who can linger longer?
this is the one time I would definitely go with the retired Union guy. The Chinaman is no idiot
How about a reality show about a middle aged, gin- drinking WASP
Oh wait, that would just be too boring
More boring than a pensioner in Bucks County watching his tomatoes grow?
Edit feature now makes Pete look foolish, yet again
speaking of funny reality shows – anyone watch The Millionaire Matchmaker? that show is hilarious.
how can anyone who posts on OT worry about looking foolish
Good point, CGar
didn’t our Goat Boy work in some affiliation with the rasputin club mentioned in that show article?
were you 2 ever even introduced into proper society?
just because BHI speaks to you in OT doesn’t count
I was also reading a sstory about the interview of the maid that DSK allegedely attacked. Seems that what she said in the interviews completely contradicted her testimony to the police and there’s almost 100% probability that the case gets thrown out. Plus, she lied about her income to get housing
step right up and admit it – which of you clowns were on the Ivy=Jester conspiracy????
I’m having another thought about this.
she lied about her income? — Who does she think she is? a hedgehog?
cgar and dibs
Snarky, dave has always been a productive member of society. He alone has kept the economies of Mexico and the Pacific Rim countries afloat for years.
CGar, please try and refrain from using the word “Rim” in polite conversation.
That wasn’t an accident, dave. This isn’t my first time at the rodeo.
The Texas Gay Rodeo Association????
cgar seems to be posting quite a bit these days. Is he on vacation or get a job at dibs outfit?
okay — i got some cleaning and painting and napping to do.
The sleazy lawyer who took the case is as much to blame.
Mr. B. disses Crown Heights! From today’s ROTD:
“While the apartment is in deep Crown Heights, between Albany and Troy avenues, it’s got a lot going for it. “
I’ve actually noticed Mr B is getting more and more HOTD, ROTD, COTD listings for the hood
First of all, Mr. B, didn’t write that, Emily did. And Albany and Troy is deep into Crown Heights.
Secondly, what’s your point? To prove there is snark in the writing on Brownstoner? What else is new? This is not phrased any differently than any other apartment listing, which then goes on to ask if people think it’s worth it. It’s a formula.
Thirdly, if you actually read it, she goes on to praise the apartment, which is quite nice,
Sad when intended victims don’t burst into flames when match is tossed in their direction.
yeah, emily always says that in her listings. there was a WB rental out near Humboldt and remember her stating it was deep in the nabe. nothing wrong with that.
I grew up in Albany.
This is the problem that pension funds really face:
States Missing Pension Targets by 50%
July 26 (Bloomberg) — In the last decade, as a wave of baby boomers began retiring, America’s biggest state pension systems earned less than half what they needed to keep up with promises made to millions of graying civil servants.
The state of Washington’s 3.92 percent return for the 10 years through June 30, 2010, after fees, was the best in a Bloomberg survey of state pensions with more than $20 billion in assets. That was nowhere close to the average yearly gains of as much as 8 percent that fund managers and public officials count on for meeting obligations to retirees.
“To assume that the median plan will reach 8 percent given this environment, that’s optimistic to say the least,” said Karl Mergenthaler, an executive director in JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s securities services group in New York. “Public plans have an incentive to maintain their expected rate where it is. The risk is that they’ll overreach for returns.”
m4l…did you see this???????
Democratic Congressman Wu of Oregon to Resign From U.S. House
July 26 (Bloomberg) — U.S. Representative David Wu, an Oregon Democrat, announced today that he will resign from the House. The Oregonian newspaper in Portland had reported on allegations that Wu engaged in unwanted sexual activity with an 18-year-old girl.
he chinese or taiwanese???
He was born in Taiwan.
Does this mean that we can all now agree that Democrats are the perverted, corrupt ones?
As soon as the next Republican gets caught with his pants down, we will switch again.
Scott, thx. I was guessing dude was probably Taiwanese. Most Chinese politicians in the US are from Taiwan. Most poor immigrants from China are not of the mindset to get into politics – ie too busy working to survive, get kids educated, keep working,… Many Taiwanese immigrants here come from money, highly educated parents who bestow upon them the value of civil service, etc. hence why they’re more probable (vs. poor immigrants from China) to run for public office.
Deeper is usually better.
dh, is there a service of some sort who will load a few hundred songs onto my iPod???
what do you mean? like buy Mp3s and then load them? you have a mac – kinda hard to beat iTunes for that.
My Walkman gave out and the casssette tapes are really no longer audible.
Your buddy, Karl lagerfeld, has 75 iPods. Who did he get to load all the music???
Yes, I know but I can’t be bothered taking the time to search for all of them and download them
That’s an idea, Ditmas.
Pay me, DIBS, I have a Mac, I’ll do it for you.
I’ll do it for round trip cab fare from WB and a bottle of Jameson 12 yr.
bring your headphones – in case DIBS will blast you with his Repub philsophy
I just want cold cash!
I don’t even remember the names of all the songs I want. Basically i want every song from the 60s, 70s disco and 80 one-hit-wonders that wrere ever popular
Don’t know, m4l.
When I was living in HK, the first host of MTV Asia was an ABC named David Wu (Wu Da Wei) He was soooooooo hot.
DIBS – I’m sure there’s compilation albums for those genres
Where did yesterday’s HOTD go?
my comment on the ROTD was wiped out too. hard to tell if it’s the freaky stupid site or the host censoring – I’ll guess it’s the stupid disqus platform
Dave you can google Top songs of…(decade) and cut and paste your list.
I thought there would be. How do you find them iniTunes?
just search “60s Hits” in the iTunes store.
I haven’t loaded any songs since i first got my iPod, probably around 2006 or so.
I’m sure the iTunes site is a lot better now than it was then
It’s very easy DIBS, just open iTunes Store and search. Lots of compilation albums, I just looked.
yeah – itunes is really easy to use now. big reason why i’m hesitant to get an android because i don’t want to use it for music
Can you not download iTunes music to Android?
i’m sure you can – but apple seems to make using non-apple products with a mac very difficult.
android phones allow you to use grooveshark. apple wont
doesn’t grooveshark primarily stream music? i’d be apprehensive to rely on that with the way cell companies are eliminating unlimited data plans.
given where you work, you have gazillion free wi-fi’s to hop onto. if you currently on an unlimited plan, they might grandfather you over
The problem is that I work so hard during the day and come home and am just not motivated to do it after such a long stressful day.
DS: “I bet you can hire somebody on Craigslist to load your iPod. In the nude”
Cobble: “Pay me, DIBS, I have a Mac, I’ll do it for you…I just want cold cash!”
I did not say I would do it in the nude, besides…it would be wasted on DIBS. : P
baked goods might be involved too.
yeah, I agree it’s AWESOME
Ditmas, go opine in the HOTD.
Nomi..did you check the next “page?”
Actually I just checked. ROTD, COTD and HOTD are no longer there from yesterday
I still see them dave.
I would pay Cobble NOT to be nude. You too, dh.
sweet. when’s my first check coming?
I would pay DH to get slopey to stop thinking about me in the nude.
that would just end up with Slopey imagining DH naked too
Trust me, I don’t. I just don’t want to keep reading about all the things you do naked. But between you and Mrs. Jackal, I keep reading and hearing about it.
So far, it seems, (1) dibs is going to pay cobble not to be naked when she downloads tunes onto his ipods, although she offered to do it naked; (2) dibs is either going to pay dh not to be naked or to ensure that cobble won’t be; (3) jackal is going to pay dh to make sure I don’t think about jackal naked. Not sure what he expects dh to do. Wouldn’t it just be cheaper if we all agreed to stay fully clothed on the OT and we all kept our money?
“Actually I just checked. ROTD, COTD and HOTD are no longer there from yesterday” (Dave)
Right. And just now, I couldn’t “reply” to you…..
Speaking of craigslist, is there something going on with Asians today??? Seems like there are very few of them trolling for sex as compared to any other day.
I couldn’t find them by scrolling down and then clicking on “Older” or whatever it says to get to yeasterday’s threads. They were not there.
I have been surprised and delighted to learn that 2 condos in my building recently sold for more than I paid for mine back in March.
And those 2 were not nearly as nice.
Also, somebody just rented a two bedroom (mine is 3) for as much as I pay per month.
Is it possible that Brooklyn condos are actually appreciating?
ID verification check here!!!!!!!!!!! Biff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you aint free, send in your side kick
All real estate appreciates, DCB.
For the type of place I would want to buy, prices seem to have been stable for the last 18 months.
BK House prices have rocketed off and left my behind at the launch pad. My BK days are ticking off – ie will sell out and move back to Manhattan
I still see HOTD from yesterday
m4l, get a place with a rental unit in manhattan so i can rent from you after I sell my place
huh??? if I can’t afford BK, how would I be able to buy a place with rental unit in Man??? you assuming I buy in Harlem, hamilton heights???
Slopey, I know you don’t. But come on, you made a pretty astonishing gaffe (inadvertently, we know), how could we possibly not make some hay with it?
Of course I know that. Do what you must. But I wouldn’t be doing my job here if I didn’t try to find some way to counterpunch.
DIBS, best I can offer you is my crown heights rental albeit that has extreme risk of high frequency of running into the Cat ladies and Bfarwell
Maybe we can start an OT nudist colony? None of us will actually be nude, but the strippers will.
Male strippers too?
Sure DIBS, you can have some male strippers at the OT nudist colony.
Thank you, SDFL.
Why are you calling lech SDFL? I thought fake What was SDFL.
no grobing though. if you insist, do it behind VIP walls
It’s an inside joke, Cobble. You weren’t over on the beach so you wouldn’t understand.
Not trying to sound condescending of course.
I should have known better than to ask.
“while a fully-clothed Cobble shows DIBS how find old posts on the site”…and serves brownies.
and M4L “grobes” strippers in the VIP room.
please clarify that it would be female strippers and I only grobe in retaliation – ie self defense.
Are you suggesting that female strippers are going to be grobing you first?
any witnesses to contest my claims??? I rest my case
Oh cripes. Gross. Gross. and Gross. Later losers.
please leave the tray of brownies
So which three did you think were gross? I hope you aren’t talking about the picture of the jackal.
grobing sounds interesting. Not sure yet what it is. i can’t find it on the internet
Maybe it’s when you grobe someone who is wearing a bathrobe?
I’ve actually fantasized about the guys at Goodburger naked while having lunch with jackal there
that dude you said has nice sculpted eyebrows???
Scary that you remember that, m4l.
I’m issuing GOTD
that’s how much you were droning on and drooling for him last time
grobe sounds ilke a weird combo of groping and probing
i bet dibs got grobed last night
hey dibs – when you make a ragu, what kinda meat do you use?
i was watching bourdain last night, he was in naples and some little old lady was making ragu with all these awesome cuts of veal/pork. most recipes i’ve seen online call for ground meat, which is boring.
dh, i just had a whole reply typed and got loged out OF THEIS F U C K IN G TWO BIT LAME SITE
I saw the episode. What was interesting is that they ate the meat separately. I usually just cook mine with hot italian sausage or meatballs.
But, a good meat to use just to flavor the sauce is lamb!!!
I’ve made an actual wild boar ragout a few times and that’s really good. Long cooking for the boar.
Gay, like you, Ditmas.
Actually it was his eyelashes more than his eyebrows.
didn’t that look amazing, dibs?
cool, perhaps i’ll try lamb. where did you get the wild boar?
This morning my kids informed me that last night’s babysitter:
1. Let them watch TV even though they made it clear to her that daddy never lets them watch TV, ever.
2. Let them “dance on the kitchen table” (wtf??)
3. Let them mash up pizza in a big pile and eat it for dinner.
Oh, and the babysitter was dressed provocatively, to my wife’s disapproval.
I’ve only done the wild boar in Philly. Don’t know who has it here but I think Los paisanos does. I’m pretty sure they have wild boar sausage.
sounds like your baby sitter needs babysitting
Will you be using that sitter again, jackal???
Jackal, it’s the things she let them do that they didn’t tell you about that you should worry about.
Yes, the unknown unknowns. Meanwhile, if your kids go to another kid’s house, do they still have to follow your rules or do host house rules apply?
We were about to use a sitter that a friend recommended until another friend told us the sitter helped her kid roast marshmallows over the gas stove.
She went on our black list.
That sounds like fun. Was the kid in danger? Or did you just not want kid to eat marshmallows?
dh..here’s the best ragu i’ve ever had….
if you google Vetri wild boar ragu you’ll also find pics of it
Great to see DCB is back
not convinced it’s him. it’s very unlike him to do his drive-by’s (ie 1 post and then disappears)
cool, thanks dibs.
are the guys at los paisanos friendly? selection looks great and figured i could ask them for advice before buying a bunch of weird meat.
yes, they are very friendly. The older guy who owns it might seem cranky at times but he’s actually very helpful, as are all the beaners who work for him.
be sure to get shoulder for any ragu, not loin or anything expensive. short ribs work really well too
CGar recommends the meat market on Court Street but I’ve never been.
Staubitz or Esposito’s. Both good. But Paisanos has the best variety of stuff.
m4l, who would bother to post as another poster unless they were trying to start trouble???
it’s the OT. nothing is too far fetched
Yeah, who here would wanna start trouble! : P
Cobble, it’s always dangerous when you turn on the kitchen stove.
Not according to BH! : P
Obama’s being stubborn. The only reason he’s against the two step plan is because step two occurs right in the face of his re-election campaign.
I dunno. Seems to me avoiding a repeat of this circus in 6 months has some value independent of where it falls on the election cycle.
49 children have died so far this year because of being left in cars.
These parents should be gassed, or worse, electrocuted.
That’s horrible. Why do people think that’s ok?
Because basically, people, in general, are stupid.
Well then the Dems have to agree to bigger budget cuts.
We could have our own mini standoff, here. Yes, it is always the side you disagree with that’s the stubborn one. The side you agree with is just being reasonable. But yes, arguing that the side that hasn’t compromised at all shoudn’t have to compromise because the side that’s compromised a lot hasn’t compromised enough is a position one could take.
Sure- as soon as the Republicans agree to revenue increases.
If neither reid’s plan nor Boehner’s plan have enought votes to pass both the Senate & the House then Obama actually needs to come down off his high horse quit the inflamatory rhetoric and figure it out.
Boehner and Cantor first.
Where’s D-Cat? Heard he was here earlier. Great. I love D-Cat.
For you capitalists, what do do with thousands of giant grasshoppers? I was trying to post a picture of a couple of beach reeds taken from my sister’s deck but the size of the file was too big. Every inch of the reeds is covered with giant grasshoppers. I was telling her that there must be a way to make money from them.
Oh…dona…fry them up in some soy sauce and eat them…they’re great!!!!!!
eeewww. Actually, I was thinking along those lines, but wondered if there was a domestic market for grasshoppers. In Japan, they had them in the deli section of supermarkets, all fried up. (hork) I remember buying crickets for the tarantula I was caring while somebody was on vacation.
Spoken like a true lawyer, Slopey.
Both sides are compromising. Spending is out of control, as is borrowing. NO ONE IN THE WORLD DENIES THAT
And having a Dem president announce he is willing to agree to a plan that cuts several trillion is quite a compromise from the tax and spend socialist side. I just don’t see the house GOP rank and file making any kind of move off first principles to get a deal done.
Here are the facts:
In just under three years, the debt has gone from under $10 Trn to $15.4 TRN
I rather like being on my high horse.
it’ll get done, Slopey.
An English saddle.
Did you ever see a horse laugh?
Ugh, my freelance job just layed me off for the next two weeks.
fu ck it y fu ck fu ck fu ck
Sorry to hear that, Cobble.
Sorry about that Cobble.
Thanks, guys. This is ruinous.
Do you know how angry this makes me to see these losers in DC screwing around! FIRE THEM ALL! Tell them to get off their asses and create JOBS!! Screw all this theory! We need ACTION!!
They are in fact wasting time on this when there are more important issues to address.
I eat them all the time in bangkok, among other things.
