From a cartoon about Obama:
“I won’t allow the half of Americans who pay no taxes to bear the burden of the other half who aren’t paying their fair share.”
CGar!!!!!!!! How u doing?????
Hanging in there, thanks. I’ve been busy auditioning for Born on the Fourth of July II and the remake of The Invisible Man.
I was also mistaken as an escapee mummy by a guard at The Brooklyn Museum.
The system of firing and rewards that was introduced by the
Washington D.C’s Chancellor of public education, Ms.
Michelle Rhee, and was and has been continued under
Chancellor Kaya Henderson looks like it’s working
Washington two weeks ago fired
just over 200 teachers for incompetence and put another
528 “on notice” that their performances were lacking and
that if they do not improve their performance they will be
fired at the end of next year! Hear, hear!!! Further, 663
teachers… out of a total of just a bit more than 4,000 in
the public school system there… were given the highest
ratings, pats on the back, and most importantly, cash
bonuses ranging from $3,000 to $25,000. As Ms.
Henderson said when passing out the bonuses to those
teachers who excelled, “This is not just about firing.” No,
indeed it is not.
As one would expect, the Teacher’s Union is up in arms
about the firings, however thus far the Washington
Teacher’s Union has been interestingly quiet about the
situation. We had expected virtual “fire and brimstone”
from the WTU and instead the President of the union,
Mr. Nathan Saunders, has protested about the
evaluation process and not too dramatically about the
actual firings. We posit that the even the Teacher’s
Union knows that the tide is turning against them;
DIBS, a similar pilot program in NYC was just ended because it produced no results in the students. Plus there have been lots and lots and LOTS of reports of principals and teachers changing the answer sheets for the standardized tests that measure “achievement.”
More like Mummy Dearest!!!!
Well, I was beaten with wire hangers for many years.
GM, DIBS, CGar.. : )
How do you feel, CGar. I was just about to text you.
“I was just about to text you.”
You people with your unlimited text plans are killing me!
Snort! Says the KING of texting!
Mr b must be feeling the pressure, leading with a ppw bike lane story.
I also auditioned for the remake of Sunset Boulevard. Since I’m always cast in the handsome leading man roles, instead of the William Holden role, I auditioned for Norma Desmond, since I can really pull off a turbin.
But they wanted to cast me as the monkey! I considered it until my agent told me that I’d have to be carried out in a tiny casket, so I turned it down because I’m claustrophobic.
Cobble. How was dinner? I don’t know that restaurant that you mentioned.
Just be glad she wasn’t going to sext you
Better today, cobble, thanks.
It was delish, reviewed in the NYT earlier this week. I forgot to bring wine, it’s a dry town, but some lovely local residents keep a stash at the rest. and gave us some! Which was lovely. Great crab cakes!
“it’s a dry town”
There’s a national drought, cobble.
Wherever I am, there is no drought! : P
How much would it annoy if I used this at the end of all my posts today???
I will ignore it! I will ignore it! I will ignore it!
Where is it?
Ocean Grove – Sea Grass. A little less fancy than I expected, but really nice, great service.
I’m liking this
I skimmed yesterday’s OT a bit. Lots of talk of water sports and bodily fluids, I see.
FWIW, I broke down a few days ago and emailed Mr. B and asked him to un-ban *rob*. I miss the little brother I never had.
Bah, that punk deserves what he gets. There are limits.
I’m not saying *rob* doesn’t bring it on himself. But, that doesn’t mean I don’t miss him and 97% of his posts. There are already far too many PLUSAs MIA.
Speaking of, I see we’re still using disqus.
Just leave him in purgatory for a few more days. Then he can come back,.But he needs to see that certain BS is unacceptable.
I know, I hate it.
“Just leave him in purgatory for a few more days.”
Well, I’m hoping Mr. B will removed the dunce cap and end *rob*’s timeout by next week.
Yeah, then I can abuse him mercilessly. : P
LOL. If you really want to punish him, you’ll force feed him some of your dry cookies!
[DUCKING FOR COVER]
: P He secretly loves my cookies.
Yes, cobble, he does, almost as much as he loves poking you (nh).
well, he went too far this time. He better back off when he comes back. Or the gloves are off.
How can you possibly wear gloves in this weather??
It seems we will keep using disqust no matter how bad it is.
I don’t miss rob. I don’t miss the gross comments or the gross names he called me and others. When I want to go to a cesspool, I’ll visit the Gowanus.
Me too. (But I have brothers).
wait a minute.. really? rob got banned? I seldom have time to follow the open thread, when did this happen? and was it announced?
coopfornow, *rob* was apparently banned one day last week. I’m not entirely sure why, other than he was PWR (posting while *rob*). I think it was announced by dave, whom *rob* apparently emailed. And that’s all I got.
Thanks. And in response to Dave’s question; I am a frequent visitor but very infrequent poster to the forum, who hopes to one day be able to afford a house. Just curious to a missed episode….
More like “Where I spit, no grass grows.”
Oh hush up! (Is that better?) : P
Yes, and no reports at all from Mr B about what’s being done to correct issues!!!!
I just encountered a new error message trying to reply to your last post, dave:
“There was an error in your submission.”
And it wouldn’t post repeatedly.
I just got the same error message a minute ago. And with no profanity!
What’s up with that? Why won’t Mr. B SAY SOMETHING?
CGar…did it also say that you were not logged in????
Nope. I haven’t gotten that particular message, dave.
No profanity in my post either, cobble. All I wanted to say to dave was: “You’re passing up a swell chance, honey.”
I was on another site this morning that uses disqus and there was a message they can’t load it. It cause problems all over the place.
So say the man with a thousand women
And, yet, somehow you knew my tramp comment was meant for you.
(What? No emoticons either?)
When it comes to rob? No- no emoticons. He’s had too many chances, and his comments about women su ck.
bxgrl, did I read something yesterday about you spending a long time on your feet (as opposed to your back)? What’s up with that?
Doing new work in my studio. I lose track of time. Go in for an hour and look up to see its 4 hours later.
THAT’s the story you’re going with?!?!
So it had nothing to do with you standing all day on the corner of Nevins & Dean?
Sorry- don’t even know where that is.
OK, fine, bxgrl, have it your way. I’ll play your little games as long as you tolerate my occasional dalliances.
I saw another house I like
Np. Just tell me to whom to write the check.
Check your email 😉
rf…they seem to be the most egregiously incompetent and malicious of all unions. Yes, lots of union workers are just plain lazy and incompetent but the teachers seem to take it to such a higher level, especially given their mandate of educating children.
“lots of union workers are just plain lazy and incompetent”
Not nice to talk that way about Pete when he’s not here to defend himself.
oh boy, riff raff is on the OT. who let you in?? Oh yeah, forgot you have the pass code
OMFG! Let me try this again since my last post was blocked.
I assume you’re referring to me, Brownie W H O R E?
Yes, was referring to you my Brownie supplier
“He better back off when he comes back. Or the gloves are off. ”
I can see Cobble in her garden wearing her floral dress and the elbow length white gloves.
This just in….
Please tell, CGar and a general message from me to the OT that i will NOT be coming back there while those three wicked witches are around. they’ve sucked every ounce of fun from OT. there is no point in posting there when im constantly dogpiled (emphasis on dog) by a bunch of dullards who provide zero entertainment. they’ve accused me of racism, sexism, homophobia, and a whole bunch of other bogus crap. lame! besides, i’ve been a cyber gypsy since i was 14 years old and always find a new (temporary) home on the internet. people can facebook me if they wanna contact me, tho i cant imagine why they would want to as i have zero interest in anyone over there.
Oh yawn. Amazing he can still rant on the OT without even being here. Talk about dogs- ay chihuahua.
What’s a “cyber gypsy?”
*rob* moves from website to website until he pisses people off sufficiently and gets banned. Recall, Survivor Sucks.
It’s a dysfunctional attention getting device from a very angry self-centered jerk.
> What’s a “cyber gypsy?”
A troll who keeps getting banned from sites, and constantly has to find new pools to pee in.
So, apparently he is actually still here, lurking!!!!!
Apparently. If he hates the OT so much, one has to wonder why he’s lurking.
My youngest brother is now around 45 or 46 and is a far less productive member of society than rob.
Who is this “coopfornow” person???
Don’t know. But I’ve told Mr. B that *rob* has a lot of followers who are not PLUSAs.
And a lot of people who are so turned off by him they no longer even bother reading brownstoner.
When I left the OT for a month or so I didn’t come back at all. It’s not interesting enough to lurk.
If its so bad, why are you back then? You’d have a great time on diehipster.
I’m not here to read what other people write. I’m here to stir sh it up when I need an outlet for that sort of thing.
Ah, well get to it.
“I’m here to stir sh it up when I need an outlet for that sort of thing.”
Really??? That doesn’t sound at all like the jackal I know.
It sounds *exactly* like the Jackal I know!
Yes, indeedy, I miss *rob*. I have told him about his m o o n f a ce envy, m/f economics, that I think it is a descent into irrationality bordering on being nuts, but *rob* is part of the family.
Not my family and he’s made it abundantly clear I, MM and cobble are not part of his. Thank G-d.
“I, MM and cobble are not part of his. Thank G-d. ”
Now we know who the three witches are. lol.
Yeah, well he’s an inconsiderate, thoughtless, self-absorbed idiot who may provide some here with amusement, but mostly just makes a pain in the ass of himself and abuses others for his own amusement.
Hey rob – Bite me.
Rob is brilliant and hilarious.
Not to some of us.Of course those who find him brilliant and hilarious are not the brunt of his “brilliance.”
I am trying to plan the next couple of days of my new life around the weather. This sucks. Next week it is going to be much cooler and I will be running around meeting people. Now I am concentrating on not passing out. I was in a bad mood yesterday. I guess tired from Florida and all of that and by the end of the day sick of walking around in tropical weather. People in the tropics know how to deal with it. Just lay around, drinking.
If I didn’t have to spend so much energy being a corporate normal I would probably be exactly like rob, except not gay and not dressed like a jackass.
Oh so you would constantly whine about how women have it so easy, insult the gynecological equipment, insult their children and them, post gross comments and in general act like an immature bo ob?
cobble, I should probably tell you that, in your absence, I’ve been staying in the main house with the air cranked up.
I miss superhero Biff.
We all miss Biff!
I’ll let him know. But, Biff is pretty much stuck behind a corporate firewall.
I miss biff too. I miss DCB. I miss DeLepp. I miss rob. I miss etson.
Oh S H I T I am going to C R Y!!!!!
dona, I was skimming some old OTs looking for something for someone and realize there are a lot more regulars missing since the relaunch. BSM and prezanon come to mind.
I used to think biff was the smartest person on brownstoner, but I have realized it’s actually rob.
Don’t kid yourself- it’s Biff. He is brilliant. Slopey is a very close second.
Whatever, dona. Even family act like asses and need to be called out at times when they step over the line. Which rob did.
True. Family does need to be called out. True. True.
How did rob step over the line? Can someone please post whatever his offensive comment was? I bet it was wicked funny.
No- it was disgusting and insulting.
What did happen to Etson? Firewall?
Even worse. Canada.
Oh….sad I’ll never look at Dudley DoRight in the same way ever again.
Yep. That and he’s been traveling a lot.
I have to email him. He, MM and I were supposed to have another dinner.
I had a personal firewall for rob
I’m pretty sure that I’m the most brilliant person here.
Are you drinking already?????
dave, your quote is pretty funny but I don’t think that makes you brilliant especially since you have repeated it twenty times. that makes you more OCD than hi IQ.
Speaking of drinking in the morning, I showed My Drunk Kitchen to my wife last night and sheepishly admitted my Internet crush on the chick who does the show.
She gave me a good wallop.
I thought your drinking is what gave you your brilliance
I like the new What-esque tag line, dibs.
It’s called a tag line, Minard
BSM had dropped off the OT before the redesign.
Wendy and I watched a couple My Drunk Kitchen episodes together yesterday.
She may be a self-absorbed hipster, but that does not make it any less funny to me.
Rob will be back if Mr B unbans him. I’ll take the bet with anyone – $100 minimum bet though
I’m not taking the opposite side of that bet.
It’s rare, but I totally agree with m4l.
Dave, speaking of the half that don’t pay taxes, I don’t see how they can possibly stop Greece from going under. they should rally forces around the less desperate economies and let Greece go.
Well, now we’re the “3 wicked witches”. Yeah, that’s brilliant and hilarious. Wow, I miss him. NOT!
I do hope all of you *rob* fans read the part where he said, “I have zero interest in anyone over there.” He wasn’t talking about Facebook. You are only valuable to him when you are paying attention to him. Since we’ve been able to go a week without every OT every day, every hour, being about “where’s rob, I miss him, let’s write to Mr. B, to let him back” he could care less about you.
Nice touch, just right for his apologists and fans. No?
Now that we’re outed, I can wear the Hat, striped stockings and black dress. My broom is out of the closet
I’ve always waved my witch flag proudly.
Had to be said. Maybe they’ll realize now.
MM, I read *rob*’s surrogate post, and I don’t believe for a minute that he means that. I’m guessing he even misses you and the rest of your coven. He’s just pissed that he was banned.
I agree with that. I think he loves the OT and yeah, he gets off on the attention and being a clown but I think he cares about people here – in his own bent way.
I’m sorry, cgar, but when someone says anything in somewhat understandable English, and then repeats it enough times, in one form or another, I tend to think they mean it.
If he’s pissed at being banned, he has no one to blame but himself.
being banned was his goal. his loves the idea of being a victim.
It was probably a huge personal achievement for him.
“being banned was his goal”
I agree. And I’ve said as much before.
I really do think he cares about the people here and misses them. But, we can agree to disagree, eSIL. Won’t be our first time. Or our last.
wow, those fake apple stores in China looks pretty legit. why stop at fake apple gears, build an entire fake store. hehe
Big TAX SECRET The middle class gets monster tax breaks. Especially people who have brownstones. Don’t spread it around.
Minard…the latest on Greece is truly amazing, especially since it’s coming from the mouths of what are supposedly Europe’s greatest financial minds.
“European officials are trying to orchestrate a second greek bailout so that a default would only last for a few days.”
The Europeans are doing what they do best, causing global chaos. What I find funny is that they all still hate each other like they have for centuries but now they have to share a small cabin called the Euro zone. It’s a complete disaster. The Brits know their neighbors, which is why they wanted no part in it. Ditto the Swiss.
Where is DSK when you need him? As much of a flaming a hole he is, he was widely respected as practical negotiator and conciilator in this mess.
Apropos of nothing, he has really rattled the French. Really. There is a level of discussion about sexual harrassment and indulgence of these top politco deviants in the wake of his arrest.
I took the train in with a French this morning. Really good guy. He moved up to Irvington from South Slope a month before we did. He also has no regrets and wonders why he didn’t do it sooner.
“I took the train in with a French this morning. Really good guy.”
Now I know for sure this jackal is an imposter!
I don’t hate on the French much. The English, yes, but not the French.
Yesterday I had to go the Fresh Meadows, Queens to take care of some business for my mother-in-law. While I was there, my wife and I went to a nearby Greek Diner that is right at the interestion of Francis Lewis Boulevard and Horace Harding Blvd. I had eggs over easy, with a side of link sausage (or that’s at least what they claimed it to be). It was – hands down – the single worst meal I’ve ever had in my life. The sausage was pure, and I mean pure, fat/garbage. My stomach is still trying to recover.
what is it with the lack of good diners in nyc? sure, there’s a few around that are okay, but nowhere close to the quality you get at the average greek diner in the ‘burbs. There’s one near my parents in Smithtown that’s truly excellent.
Good point. Brooklyn used to have a bunch of really good diners. In the past 20 years, however, they’ve all declined. One of the last of the greats – Kings Plaza Diner – closed down last year.
anyone ever been to the New Floridian on Flatbush?
always wondered what is like….
Best Greek diner ever is in Clinton Hill, dh (if you EVER get it together to move over here). It is Mike’s on the corner of DeKalb and Hall. All the best things about a Greek Diner: cheap, predictable, delicious. Also, they are really nice. Nice to all the patrons. Greek brothers own it. Greek sister is a waitress during the week and the same Mexican cooks and waiters for 15+ years.
They used to be in Brooklyn Heights and they moved. I was so SAD. Then 10 years later I move to Ft. Greene and find this place and I see ALL THE SAME PEOPLE only 10 years older. It was wierd but I was so happy. They just upped and moved the whole thing to right near Prett and they are beloved in the hood.
I like Mike’s too. I used to work around the corner, on St. James, and went to Mike’s all the time. My only complaint is that they need more room. On weekends, it’s packed. On Sunday, after Emmanuel Baptist lets out, forget it.
I know, but the amazing thing is that people wait on line outside. Even in the winter. I just go sit at the counter if I am alone or sometimes if I am with somebody.
Mike’s is great!
Food great. Service great. Cheap. Happy people. Nice to patrons. Nice to staff. What’s not to like???
diner heaven := NJ
Well, I always knew Cobble was a witch. I just considered bxgrl & MM as annoying pains-in-the-asses.
Well, that’ more complimentary than what we consider you
Watch that, or I’ll cast an evil spell on you! : P
This would be the most evil:
You are forever forced to be the sex slave of a red haired northern European.
Yeah, something JUST like that! ; )
cobble really is so Elizabeth Montgomery.
Time for a new avatar, Samantha!
By the way: I’m the smartest person I know.
Great entry, Benson. Are you drinking too? Cold sake with those crazy Japanee guys. At least wait till lunch!!!!!!
Once again, bxgrl ‘s comeback is so gut wrenching hilarious that I can hardly post
I know. And I so hate seeing you incapacitated.
MM is probably the most sensible poster on this blog, her take on Rob is spot on.
Yes, Minard. Imagine all the Asians doing the same thing!!!! LOL
I’d love to pi ss my entire day away talking about rob, but I’ve decided to go to the beach instead. Later…gators.
Wear 80 spf and drink water…..!!!!!
I have 50, an umbrella, a good book, Vanity Fair, bottles of frozen water, frozen grapes, not frozen cherries and morning glory muffins which I made myself.
“not frozen cherries”
List of countries I have routinely trashed on the OT:
UK (England in particular)
Spain? Can’t remember. They piss me off but not sure if I’ve trashed them here.
I like working with Brits but they are slackers compared to the US.
They also drink way way too much. Or maybe it is all the metals traders who are really a pretty dissipated bunch.
what about Venezuela?
I like Venezuela and Venezuelans. Unfortunately they are suffering under a corrupt, petty dictator.
CGar, just tell your boss to get the new AT&T-sponsored kindle 3G for $139. it’ll allow him to log into here. the 3G wireless connection is free – ie Amazon pays for it
just pass the info along man. you in no position to decide for your boss.
Singapore also kind of pisses me off. Those people are so f’ing uptight.
I agree with you on the Singaporeans.
Tramway Diner on 2nd Ave at the foot of the Queensboro Bridge is still very good.
And there’s one on madison a few blocks up from 58th. can’t remember the name…freshly carved roast turkey
The professional culture / work ethic in Singapore is so extreme I think they get less done than people who let themselves relax and f uck off occasionally.
used to be two good diners on Fifth Avenue just south of the Flatiron building. Now they’re expensive ladies boutiques.
You’ve got them pegged correctly, jackal. They are sooo uptight about their standing in Asia (ahem, a small “city state) that they have created a culture of extremism
Yup. They have no natural resources and they’re the size of a postage stamp. They learned a while ago that the only way to get any r-e-s-p-e-c-t in the neighborhood is to basically turn into an island full of hypercompetitive professional doucheknockers. You know that guy in college who wasn’t all that smart but studied ALL THE F’ING time and managed to get a good GPA and a good job by destroying his social life and doing nothing but work and study 24/7? That’s Singapore.
The best coffee shop/diner I know (of the old-school type) in Brooklyn is a little place in Dyker Heights. I can’t remember the name of it, but it is on 13th Ave between 75th and 76th Streets. Clean, good grub and very reasonable.
what a great little house!
I love it!
i love that they put the floor plan too!
Me too. It was so beautifully thought out.
WTF did rob say? Can someone copy his offensive post? Was this the day he said something about lesbians?
Look out. MM posted pics of bxgrl’s house in Walkabout. > > >
Wipe your shoes before you come in, don’t touch anything and behave.
Has anyone been to Juniors lately? I passed by the other day and it seemed to be doing good business.
I could never go back to Junior’s after seeing the video of rats strolling among the cheesecakes in the display case.
Same reason we’ll never go back to Ratifico.
I guess I missed that video
I refuse to go to any place where I have to wait on line, especially if we are talking about a diner. As DH said, a good diner is not that hard to find in the suburbs or elsewhere.
ok I am out of here. Have a good day everybody.
the diner further down on dekalb (& vanderbilt) is pretty solid too. the recent change in ownership didn’t seem to impact the price, feel, and quality of the food and svc
I’ve been there, you’re right, it’s not bad.
I wish I had the money, and knew someone with the expertise to open a classic diner somewhere on Nostrand Avenue, in Crown Heights. Nothing fancy, just plain old short order cook diner food, open early, closing late. We would coin money. The person who manages to do so will not regret it, and I’ll be a frequent patron.
I’m trying to convince a buddy to buy a building and put in a dim sum / bakery into crown heights. He is seriously thinking about it. if I have the money, I would do it myself
He would make an absolute fortune. Now that the new cafe is open on Pacific, the NoBar and the new sushi place, business is coming to our side of Nostrand. We don’t have enough good eating places around but Mm is right. A good diner would coin money.
I’m surprised that chinese buffet on NY ave and atlantic is still open. I thought that would be a flop.
Me too- we’ll see how long though. They could have done it a whole lot better.
“to open a classic diner . . . Nothing fancy, just plain old short order cook diner food, open early, closing late.”
MM, I’ve long thought about opening a restaurant (or diner) serving really great, classic comfort food.
We’ll run it for you- MM isn’t kidding. In Crown Heights you would make money hand over fist.
have you even attempted to low-ball “that place” yet?? I think I saw the ad still asking for 250k a few weeks ago
> I’ve long thought about opening a restaurant (or diner) serving
> really great, classic comfort food.
Do it in Ditmas Park and you will gain my undying fealty.
Sometimes I can’t decide which annoys me more:
3. Americans who profess to love Argentina and / or Argentines
Were you frightened by an Argentinian in your callow youth?
As I’ve said before, jackal, I love Argentina and Argentines.
Sigh. I guess you can’t buy taste.
CGar…I saw the Walkabout.
Talk about an unrepentant job of shilling!!!!!
No doubt bxgrl put her up to it.
Keeping up the property values!
I work for a singaporean firm. so no comment on singaporeans from me
awesome dona – i’ll have to try it. i’m really tiring of all these brooklyn locavore hipster places.
has anyone been to the ihop in downtown brooklyn?
could’ve owned an ihop in newark 12 yrs again. I would be rolling in dough now.
Yeah, we checked it out once. It’s an IHOP. Calorie laden, artery clogging, giant plates of carbs and fat. Sometimes, there is a time and place for that. I’ve been to IHOP maybe 7 times in my life, 6 of them outside of Brooklyn, it was no better or worse than the others.
ok cool. i freakin love IHOP, although sometimes chains in NYC fall short for some reason compared to locations elsewhere. i’ll have to check it out!!
i love how your breakfast comes out on no less than 3 huge plates!!
That’s the Hansel and Gretel House!!
Pure fantasy in Bay Ridge.
actually, now that i think of it – there’s a decent diner in Long Island City, right outside the Court Sq G train stop.
hey everyone go over to the ALternate side parking forum post and weigh in. that is a topic that does not get discussed much and drives me absofuckinglutely crazy!
I have not been to any IHOPs in NY, but I would go to one before I went to the diner on my block again (at the corner of 3rd and Atlantic). The food was lousy and the service was poor.
I got in a lot of trouble once accusing 11201 of being an arrogant Argentinian. I actually think he was just a wannabe. True Argentinian arrogance is something that must be cultivated from birth and polishes at polo matches and yacht regattas.
I see you miss your fav foil a ton. btw, that’s 11217; not 11201
Is the diner on the corner of Smith & Atlantic any good????
It’s fine. I’ve eaten there a couple of times. I like the one a few blocks farther down Smith better.
Which one, which direction???
probably toward Pete’s place
A few blocks south of Atlantic, opposite Clover Club. jackal and I ate there after a very late night drinking.
dave, the markets are up sharply. what do they know we don’t know yet? wonder if the gang of six plan is gaining tractionl?
Think they’re more up on Europe than here.
man Mr B is really going for it today- already we have threads about bike lanes, smoke from neighbors apts, double parking AND gawdy a s s homes in mill basin! i love it. da block is HOT!!!
but Europe is a disaster. why do people not understand that?
Minard…short covering primarily in European banks.
it’s not about the US issues, about the Europeean ones. Forget about the defecit ceiling..it’s not an issue
Europe being a disaster is largely fully discounted by the market.
short covering. I see.
I think Europe is like the Titanic -not enough lifeboats.
> I think Europe is like the Titanic
And the USA is like the Lusitania, with the role of the torpedoing submarine being played by Wall Street.
The Europeans should forget about Greece and throw everything at stopping the contagion that could sink the big economies like Spain and Italy. those are like the 8th and 9th largest economies in the world.
think the german, french banks would get killed. if not for looking out for their own banks, pension fds, etc, they probably give greece the boot a long time ago
If you analyze the numbers, Italy actually has no problems at all.
It is like the financial version of the beginning of WWI -all these archaic treaties and protocols among countries that don’t like or trust each other. When a Sarajevo-like event happens -watch out!!
It’s all about what each bank’s exposure is to each country. the data is out there and verifiable.
Most of the stocks are oversold
I’m surprised you aren’t still blaming Bush, Ditmas!!!
Who said I’m not?
Well, then don’t be namby pamby about it, like the rest of your ilk, grow a set and come right out and say it!!!
Bush did a whole lot of damage, but the start of the current cycle of fiscal disaster is Reagan’s fault.
There, I said it. Look upon my ample set and despair!
it does seem like the disparity of wealth is reaching new modern-day highs in the US. Wall Street bankers will continue doing what they do best -making themselves very rich- until the are forced to stop.
Do you think Wall Street is despensible??? It is in places like Venezuela, Myanmar, Laos, Syria, iraq & Iran.
Dave I hear from people all the time that current troubles are because of Bush. The blaming of Reagan has quieted down though.
I think Venezuela has a stock exchange. It’s a wealthy country but it has that wealth disparity thing that can really backfire on capitalistic societies. Don’t know about Laos but pretty sure Iran has a stock exchange too.
Venezuela is a disaster. A disaster. The Clown-in-chief, Chavez had run the economy into the ground. Randomly expropriating businesses and nationalizing them is NOT capitalism, and that is what Chavez is doing. He is a buffoon running that oil rich country into the ground.
Dave and Ditmas in a whose are bigger contest!
None of you have any idea whatsoever whose fault it is, how it started, when it will stop, whether it will stop, or how to fix it. None of you understand Wall Street. None of you understand the economy. You have views on social issues that you probably understand. You use economic issues that you do not understand as subterfuge in the fight over social issues.
It’s the same on the right.
Listening to you all explain whose fault it is is like listening to my 4 year old explain how he thinks airplanes work.
fair enough but you also can’t deny the economic issues and social issues are irrevocably intertwined.
so you are Argentinian!
has the kid mastered the art & science of electricity yet or his daddy has been monopolizing the generator thingie?
The kid is a kid. Right now mastering wiping his own ass is a little higher on the list than advanced physics.
nah, that’s for other folks’ regular kids. More is expected of little Lech
Well I did manage to teach the older two kids multiplication and division recently, so I guess that’s a start.
Stocks and bonds don’t mean diddly to people who can’t find work, and are worrying about where their next meal is coming from, and how they are going to shelter their families. That’s as true in Venezuela as here, as anywhere else.
There is nothing wrong with a thriving and wealthy financial sector, it’s an important part of any successful society, but they are not gods, nor do they live on Mt. Olympus, where mere mortal law cannot touch them. I just don’t understand the mindset that cares little or nothing for other people, especially those with so little. How rich do you, or your companies have to be so that it’s enough? How can people celebrate the closing of plants, and the firing of thousands so that stock prices rise, as a good thing? That’s the disconnect that dismays and angers me.
MM…you’re way off base. no one proposed or said any of that. i was merely calling Ditmas out for blaming Wall Street. It was all in good fun.
I wasn’t accusing you of anything, Dave, I was just ranting. Everyone rants around here.
I don’t. I discuss, argue and debate.
You know, they have medication for those delusions.
Did I kill the OT?? Well l8r h8rs, I’m going for a run.
Speaking of Singaporeans, that woman in the Hot Seat thread today has a typical Singaporean name.
No such thing. Singaporean names are commonly Chinese, Malay, or some third thing that I’m forgetting. No typical Singaporean name.
Not to mention she’s hot.
not as hot as the agent showing me listings in downtown Man
Jackal, you don’t know what you are talking about. Goh is one off the most respected names in Singapore.
GK Goh is a stock brokerage firm
Stick to summonses.
And I’m sure Goh comes from Chinese, Malay, or that third thing I’m forgetting. I doubt it’s any more Singaporean than Chang.
Stick to nooners and occasionally checking Bloomberg.
WELCOME BACK JACKAL.
[singing to myself……SEEMs like OOOOLD times….HAVing YOU to talk to, seems like old times, Having you to talk to….la da DA da]
Same thing beginning in Peru, too.
Yes, it’s chinese, specifically Hokian, dummy.
You trying to compare knowledge of Asian culture with me???????
Well so far it’s Jackal 1, DIBS 0, so I’ll quit while I’m ahead.
Really going for that run now.
DIBS, you of opinion that Singapore broke away from Malaysia or that Malaysia gave Singapore the boot – ie as far as the origins of singapore the country
Chatting with an Asian guy on Yahoo Im who is asking for money and then gets bent out of shape when I called it hustling. I bet he’s actually Singaporean.
I can’t actually remeber the history back then, m4l. whenever I meet malaysians, they seem to sadly be Singaporean wannabees, but much more likeable and fun to be with.
Meanwhile, Singporeans are American wannabes. Top girl and boy names recently were Nicole and Jonathan.
“I can’t actually remeber the history back then”
But, you were well into adhulthood back then.
Yes, Singaporeans ARE American wannabees but they are extremely critical of all things American.
Only their society knows best.
I’ve had many conversations about this with many of them. it’s sad really.
One of them was criticizing the fact that some museums here charge admission. he failed to understand the difference between “public” museums and private ones. I also pointed out that Singapore does actually have ONE museum.
did I get 300?
anyone dare to claim they cut me off and claimed 300??
m4l, we have a bag of candied ginger here in the office.
let me know when you have baked goods and I’ll stroll over
Candied Ginger sounds like a drag queen’s name
How do replies affect the count toward 300? If soneone erplies and that reply appears under a relatively old comment and then in a few minutes jumps up to where it belongs in the space-time continuum, does it then knock comment 300 down to 299?
let’s cut to the chase, are you challenging / questioning my claim to post 300????
I don’t know exactly, Slopey, but it definitely screws up the post count. Last week, Arkady, Snappy, bxgrl, m4l and I ALL had 500, 600 and 700, but the post counts kept changing.
No- because it goes by their version of a time stamp-
So Obama puts an end to the spcae program and about 9,000 people are going to lose their jobs.
Don’t over-analyze it, Slopey.
take a look at kian goh……meeeoowwwww!!!!!
was the switching / transposing of her name’s spelling on purpose or you’re that mesmerized???
You think you can afford her, randi?
Prada bags, ferragamo loafers and all that?????
he get it from Canal St.
bigger issue is will Randi be able to win battle over CGar for the gal. I dont think CGar has any hesitations to deliver low blows when a hot gal is involved
At my height, low blows are all I can deliver.
bxgrl, I thought you only knew tramp stamps. Who knew you were so tech savvy?
You haven’t been paying attention, dave
It’s not ending- only the Shuttle Program is: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/02/science/02nasa.html
And this from 2008- before Obama was elected: http://www.thespacebuff.com/mars/the-end-of-americas-manned-space-program/
Yes, but it still will mean the loss of 9,000 jobs.
Smart policy at times like this.
So, we should not be cutting any government spending that employs people? Are you asserting that the shuttle program is a cost-effective way of using tax revenues to employ 9000 people?
Some of those people will go to other places in the agency but here I thought this is exactly what you Republican have been saying- less government spending. You should be in hog heaven over this news.
So Dave now supports higher government employment levels?
The new NASA strategy is to use private contractors to send supplies and astronauts into space. Seems to be a more Republican approach than having the government control everything.
Dave, the DOW is up 150 points for no reason.
I think this is a chance to sell and wait under the shelter until the storm passes.
I was baiting. Seems to have worked.
The private contractors are definitely the way to go.
Nothing happens for no reason, Minard. There’s a ever-so-slight mood here of putting more “risk on” with the banks, China stocks and Europe.
Part of it has to do with leading indicator strength here in the US. Another issue is that earnings announcements have been positive with 70% of announced companies beating expectations but, more importantly, no downgrades of the future outlook
And some will go to the private contractors.
I really admire the way Wendi Murdoch gave a beat-down to the pie-thrower. Now that’s a wife! No wonder the guy has been so successful.
She’s kind of young to have been the reason for his success. Including his success now in the hot seat. Interesting you admire that kind of person.
Wendi Murdoch is hot too. Hadn’t realized that before. There’s a Law & Order (CI I think) episode based on her life.
benson, her reaction time and her response was almost bodyguard grade. So she is brain, beauty, AND BRAWN all rolled up in one – in other words, YET another top shelf talent raided but the dude is at least mega rich & powerful. guess I can let that one go
Ask Milly Dowler’s family what they think about him.
Also, as you all should realize by now, I’m much more in favor of salary & benefit cuts and not outright firing of workers.
Too bad the unions are in the way of that and it’s their own rank and file who get fired.
Dibs — in all seriousness, whether govt employee or contractor, do you think space program is or can be worth the $$ we put into it?
benson, many of us old geezers have known the benefits of a young Asian spouse/wife/bf/partner for many years
I can’t recall the overall $$$ amounts. I’m sure the private sector can do it more efficiently though. that goes without saying.
Is the private sector prohibited from setting up its own space program?
> I’m sure the private sector can do it more efficiently
Indeed. For example, KBR did a shockingly good job building those showers for the Army:
I’ve always admired how Halliburton and Blackwater saw to business too. *eyes rolling*
I am really impressed with the work that SpaceX has done. In less than 10 years they have built a new rocket and capsule systems from the ground up, largely with money from private investors.
The have had several successful launches, and should be carrying supplies to the ISS in less than a year.
NY Times reporting that Obama & Boehner close to a deal.
Didn’t I tell you this was all much ado about nothing
Didn’t I tell you this was all much ado about nothing
Does Boehner have his conference on board? On this one, it really is not all over until the shouting stops.
I always knew there would be a deal, just like there was before the “government shutdown” earlier.
I just hope the compromise does not make the deficit worse, like the shutdown deal did.
Nothing stopping the private sector other than ROI
that’s the key point, though. I’m not a big fan of $$ we spend on space program. I think there are more important things govt must do that private sector won’t and more efficient ways to spend $$ to create jobs. But whether private sector can do something more efficiently is irrelevant if there isn’t ROI to encourage private sector to actrually do it.
The satellite launch business is close to 100% private, with the Air Force renting facilities and providing certain safety oversight features.
If you read the article closely, Ditmas, they weren’t built by KBR.
“Army investigators have since reclassified Maseth’s death as negligent homicide caused by KBR and two of its supervisors. An Army investigator said KBR failed to ensure work was done by qualified electricians and plumbers. The case is under legal review.
KBR and another contractor, Arkel International, are the targets of a second lawsuit, filed by the family of another soldier electrocuted in Iraq, Staff Sgt. Christopher Lee Everett, 23, of Huntsville, Texas. Everett, a member of the Texas Army National Guard, was killed in September 2005 when the power washer he was using to clean a vehicle short-circuited.
Task Force SAFE inspectors found many of the facilities that fall under KBR’s contract have electrical problems, according to an internal military document obtained by The Associated Press.”
But the buck stops there.
Indeed. A hot wife that delivers beat-downs to her husband’s foes. What more could you ask for?
Absolutely nothing more, benson.
A better, more ethical husband.
There are tradeoffs in all relationships.
I guess she liked money that much.
“A better, more ethical husband.”
Pretty sure this pie was meant for me, benson.
Actually no. I’m liking you today for the Gingerbread house article
And you should really thank MM for not mentioning in her article that you had her living in the garage.
She was ok with it- she has the turntable for her bed.
Ixnay on discussing MM’s kinky side in the OT. Next you’ll mention her mirrored walls and ceiling!
Oh no- you didn’t! Now the secret’s out- and she’s going to kick me out. Thanks a lot.
How can she kick you out of a house that’s in your name??? Relax. You’re emarried to a lawyer.
Besides, I’m the one who paid a contractor good money to install all those mirrors. Not to mention the 2-way glass so you can watch.
Sweetie! *grabbing your ear and dragging you into the corner* Sweetheart!! We don’t mention these things on the OT. Remember?
As I said, how else to get you to stop ignoring me but to divulge your/our secrets???
And how else to get you to stop ignoring me but to divulge your/our secrets???
m4l, would your wife guard you like that???
Or are you more interested in eating the pie?????
DIBS, the more probable scenario is my wife’s yapping gets her into a “situation” and I have to step in to defuse or squash it
“Or are you more interested in eating the pie?????”
Here’s photo to get the liberal lassies in a lather. Wendi Murdoch and Sarah Palin together!
No- we just laugh at them.
now that’s what I call “fancy feast” that I can really dig into
I have to tip my hat to your talent pool there, if Wendi is any indication.
benson, it’s the simple law of huge numbers. when there’s like a couple of hundred million chinese girls, there’s bound to be a large number (albeit small % of the total) of top shelf talents
I think the love affair with Wendi Deng is hilarious. Just goes to show what people’s priorities are. marry a rich and powerful, immoral old coot, give him what he wants but because they’re rich, no one is calling it like it is. There are women standing on street corners doing the same thing.
Actually, edear, it’s marry the hot young Asian woman, not the rich powerful immoral old coot (no offense, dave).
Let’s say they both have their priorities.
yeah, very probably she married him for his money and power. I don’t see anything wrong with that. on the other hand, probable Murdoch married her cause she’s a hot young beauty (vs. her nicey nice personality). We’re all wh ores to some respect for something we want. marrying up like she did for money & power aint the proudest thing to do but I wouldn’t equate her to a street walker
It’s only a difference in scale, M4L.
Says a woman who emarried for money power and real estate.
Oh no- I fell in love with you first. Did I not give you handmade jewelry the first time we met?
You did. And I still have it.
[SEARCHING FRANTICALLY TO MAKE SURE ONE OF MY GFs DIDN’T STEAL IT]
life is matter of a difference in scale. scale is what separates a ton of stuff. if we take scale out of the equation, we’re ALL SINNERS as no one is without sin.
Who said otherwise?
Would you deliver a beat-down (Wendi-style) if CGAR was attacked in such a fashion?
Actually, benson, she has on many occasions. (If only to protect her vast real estate holdings.)
bxgrl insinuating that Wendi is a w h o r e
Classy, very classy.
So who is worse?????
Wendi or DSK’s wife??????
Wendi or DSK’s wife??????
I prefer Murdoch’s daughter who held an Obama fund-raiser in London.
I still think Sarah Palin’s hot. For a Caucasian woman. Though not nearly as hot as Arkady.
Not really, bxgrl.
That’s not a very progressive view of women coming from you.
It’s very progressive. I don’t think women should be bought and sold, by anyone -least of all themselves.
I wonder if Rupert considered a woman’s skill in martial arts before signing up? I still can’t get over the video of Wendi’s beat -down. Like M4L, her reaction was almost bodyguard-grade.
Us liberal ladies have more respect for these girls. They know how to kick butt.
Life is full of concessions, bxgrl. Even in a happy marriage of same age equals, there are tradeoffs.
it’s just the age thing that bothers you, isn’t it.
Yep. I’m in not so rare agreement with dave on the tradeoffs.
None of it bothers me except the idea that this woman is so wonderful for defending her jerk of a husband.
bxgrl speaks from much experience with me, dave.
fair is fair then you have to bury Hillary for sticking with that roaming eyes, hands, wee wee bubba clinton
If she were the subject of t he discussion, I would have so drop it already.
You’re being very judgemental about a relationship of which you have no clue about.
I learned from two master how to be judgmental- you and benson.
Don’t you know that Bxgrl has done a full investigation into the Murdoch’s marriage? In the same way that Rob travels – over the internet. She is certainly qualified to pass judgment on Wendi.
Just taking a page from your book.
I had my doubts about congress and actually it ain’t done yet, but the signals look good.
European financial meltdown is still a looming threat though.
“the idea that this woman is so wonderful for defending her jerk of a husband. ”
Are we talking about Hillary Clinton?
None of it bothers me except the idea that this woman is so wonderful for defending her jerk of a husband.
WOW…if you don’t defend your wife or your husband, who do you defend??
Dave- no question she did what she was supposed to. Doesn’t mean I have to admire her or her husband. Nor does it make her a hero- she defended him from a cream pie, not a shotgun.
“None of it bothers me except the idea that this woman is so wonderful for defending her jerk of a husband.”
Are you going to admit that this is a crazy statement or do i have to call it out for what it is????????
Do what you like dave. I’m sure it will be exactly what you usually do.
Oh for crying out loud. Bxgrl is as entitled to rag on Wendi Deng as you are entitled to turn her into some kind of symbol of uber-wifehood. It isn’t worth the back and forth, which is getting more and more snotty and self righteous. Drop it already.
m4l, how many times a day do you have “impure thoughts?”
I know this wasn’t meant for me, but how can a person possibly be expected to quantify a thing like that, dave???
surprisingly, a ton ton less vs my younger days. I dont go looking for eye candy but when they’re right there, I’ll take a long look, admire them, and then some impure thoughts. but unprovoked (ie no eye candy around), rarely such thoughts
“how many times a day do you have “impure thoughts?”
Per day? You have the units wrong. That’s like asking how many centimeters from South Ferry to Times Square.
“snotty and self righteous”
Now there are two new interesting avenues to pursue here in the OT.
I think Minard and Ditmas can be snotty.
> I think Minard and Ditmas can be snotty.
He’s snooty and I’m Snidely.
I agree with you jackal. But I wasn’t talking to you. I was talking to m4l.
“When I’m talking to you you’ll know it”
LMAO. One of my all-time favorite movies, dave. I can prolly still recite the whole thing.
or some quote like that
“You take your hands off me, or I’m gonna knee your b a l l s right through the roof of your mouth. Is that enough of a threat?”
I said that to a guy in the subway once.
Yes, I know, that was ME.
Did I know you then 😉
Much too well, I’m afraid.
“how many times a day do you think about sex?”
“how many millimeters per gallon does your car get?”
“how many picograms do you weigh?”
“how many seconds long is Casablanca?”
I think a downside of being married to Wendi Murdoch might be that she might beat the crap out of you if she catches your eye roving. It’s worth it, though.
Rupe has more problems than a possible roving eye, or a ninja wife. It’s karma time.
if you weren’t happily married already, I might’ve had to put you onto my watch list as you’re showing too much interest, for my comfort, in my peeps’ top talent
I’m not remotely snooty. I just write well.
Whatever, people. You all don’t like Murdoch because he owns fox news. It’s that simple. I doubt you’re at all familiar with the full breadth of his business practices over the years.
No, it’s not that simple, and believe it or not, I actually have a clue as to what he’s been up to all these years. He’s been around long enough to have had plenty written about him over the last quarter century, and I read a lot. Please don’t tell me why i don’t like someone, or presume I’m as shallow as his headlines.
MM, no one would call you shallow. (To your face.)
Minard, you’re FRENCH. By definition you are snooty.
Snooty? Snooty. Snotty? Snotty.
— Ferris Bueller
The French I sat with on the train this morning is not snooty at all.
where is ENY when you really need him??? in his absence, let me say EUROTRASH!!!!!!
basically that’s it, jackal.
Note the comment that if it was Hillary she would have dropped it a long time ago.
No because you and benson would have loved beating that dead horse because it was the Clintons.
DIBS you’re on thin ice too. Did you seriously bemoan the loss of GOVERNMENT JOBS earlier???
Was he weraing cologne or deodorant?
Not that I could smell.
Nor was I.
“Don’t you know that Lech has done a full investigation into ththose who don’t like Murdoch? In the same way that Rob travels – over the internet. He is certainly qualified to pass judgment on all of us. “
If you read my post later, i was baiting them.
Someone had to. You were off working or doing something foolish
So unlike you, dave. And very unbecoming.
Dave, you are Philadelphian by definition you are Quaker.
bxgrl, you have made it very clear, innumerable times, why you don’t like Murdoch.
No one neeeds to look that up on the internet
I didn’t like him and his business practices before that dave. Like MM, I am a voracious reader and I happen to be interested in the world around me.
Do any of you wear deodorant on a daily basis? I always figured that was a product for teenagers when their hormones make them stink. Do grownups actually wear that stuff?
Yes. There are laws mandating that hairy men of Eastern European descent wear deodorant.
I can’t wait until I retire so i can watch Fox all day. But we should have a Republican president by then so all the fun will be gone
oh good- nice to know how you get your well rounded and informed opinions.
100% of the people I know who profess to have a problem with Murdoch’s business practices are liberal.
Subterfuge. Kind of like claiming you know how the economic crisis started, and oh coincidentally it’s the other side’s fault.
Call it what you want- you’re still wrong and guilty of oversimplification.
I don’t dislike Murdoch’s business practices – i dislike his politics
Can we go back to Wendi?
jackal, no no one wears deodorant that’s just an urban myth.
Aren’t many Quakers left in Philly, Minard. I wasn’t born there.
“I don’t like Clinton because he got a blowjob and lied about it”
“I don’t like Murdoch because of his business practices”
“I don’t like Obama because the economy isn’t doing well”
“I don’t like Bush because I think he’s uneducated”
ALL TRANSPARENT SUBTERFUGE
who needs deodorant in NYC’s delightful climate?
If a taxi driver stinks, I don’t tip him.
what if he’s a hot Asian dude???
If they are riding around with the windows up and I get in and there’s no Ac…no tip.
I can get full on AC in a taxi in any third world country. Why can’t I get it here??????????
Oh that’s right you’re a descendant of the old governor of New York’s notorious mistress. I forgot.
I don’t understand why it’s so difficult to air condition a NYC cab.
m4l, I’ve never had a hot looking taxi driver in NYC, never.
Also, remeber , Ramadan is arriving soon. Try and get a taxi then
I haven’t been in a taxi in years that didn’t have AC on when they should.
CGAr…simple…the owners are too cheap to keep it working.
yeah – the owner, not the driver.
NYC is not like the Third World.
Middle class people live really well in the Third World.
I’ve never had a taxi in Hong Kong, bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, etc, etc, etc that did not have good AC
I love taxi in HK. so freaking cheap. so easy to hail. great svc.
Where are all the ladies?
I’m ready for my sponge bath now.
Oh help me…
What? You asked me if there’s anything I need??
you are right. true. so true.
If I skipped wearing deodorant one day, you would probably smell me across Brooklyn.
Can we elect Wendi as taxi & Limousine Commissioner????
Argentina has great taxis.
Last time I was in Buenos Aires the taxi driver was insane and kept trying to take a group of us to a whorehouse. All we wanted was a steak and some goddamn malbec.
jackal, in fairness to the driver, he prolly thought you were insane, and nothing wrong with soaking up some local culture in a BA whorehouse.
For steak in BA, I recommend Juana M, known almost only to locals.
Close, Minard but not really.
Oder vielleicht nicht.
Just because, here’s the Dancing Squid Bowl:
I’ve had some crazy ass, cool cab drivers here.
Not really, Minard. My mother’s aunt was the “confidante” of Erastus Corning, the Mayor of Albany who was mayor for 44 years. She basically ran the upstate Democratic Party and had lots of unquotable words for those from downstate
And she was Kirsten Gillibrand’s grandmother.
Dave, I klnow.
Ditmas, similar to drunken shrimp that I’ve had in Hong Kong.
“For steak in BA, I recommend Juana M”
Sounds more like a recommendation for a w hore!
jackal is on a tear today.
